Trump May Have Won, But Ford Is Still Moving Its Small-Car Production to Mexico
New York Magazine ^ | November 16, 2016 | Charley Lanyon

Posted on 11/16/2016 5:46:17 AM PST by monkapotamus

Ford’s chief executive officer Mark Fields must not respond well to threats; he admitted to Reuters on Tuesday that Ford was still planning on moving the production of its small cars from Michigan to — you guessed it — Mexico...

Fields claimed that the move would not have any effect at all on American jobs because the move south will “make room for two very important products we’ll be putting back into Michigan plants.”

Ford has yet to announce what, exactly, those “important products” are, but Fields is convinced that the move will lead to “no job impact whatsoever.”

“It’s very difficult for us to be able to make money on a vehicle produced in the U.S,” said Fields, explaining that if they were to raise the cost of their smaller cars to compensate for the increased cost of manufacturing in the United States the car just “wouldn’t sell...”

This will backfire. If Trump and his administration become cheerleaders for “Made in the USA” (which we haven’t experienced for decades), people will begin to prefer products which are not foreign-made. It’ll be odd, but to support our economy, US citizens might be educated to buy a Hyundai (as an example) made in the USA rather than a foreign made Ford.

Are you trying to convince Americans that we cant close down factories in Mexico because we will be invaded? If so go back to Canada.

For what it’s worth, Ford has also come out against the TPP.

A $5000.00 import duty on each car produced in Mexico might persuade Ford to reconsider.

Yes. But bad for everybody.... Trump's threats to impose trade barriers (if accurate and imposed) would be harmful.

So did you vote for Trump? If so you are a hypocrite. The issue was decided on November the 8th. Free Traitors™ lost.

Ok, first let me reiterate, I don't care what happens in Mexico. I am 100% for the US building a wall to control the border.

The people crossing illegally into the US are economic refugees. Decimate the auto industry in Mexico and the pressure on the border will be that much worse. That's all. Not a threat, an observation.

Mexico is not a good neighbor of the US. It never has been. The only good thing coming out of Mexico is Corona. Build the wall.

Is Ford really this stupid? How many US customers want to buy one of those cheap cars after a 35% tariff has been added to the price?

Yes, for a short while.

Why would you favor or disfavor a business for looking out for its own self-interest? And making decisions based on the law of the land where they are headquartered?

New white Broncos?

Old joke -

Q. What is the difference between OJ Simpson and John Elway?
A. OJ drove a slow white Bronco. Elway WAS a slow white Bronco.

Didn’t Trump say he’d tax any American car made in Mexico and imported into the US?

I voted for Trump because I'm counting on him to take the first step that is necessary to bring these operations back to the U.S.:

DUMP THE STUPID F#&ING REGULATIONS HERE IN THE U.S. BEFORE COMPLAINING ABOUT COMPANIES MOVING THEIR OPERATIONS TO FOREIGN COUNTRIES.

See post 67.

Personally I think including Mexico in NAFTA was insane. Industry was bound to flee to Mexico and that is not good for Canadian or American workers.

My comments on economic refugees are an observation, not a threat. Try not to be so defensive.

Because you want to? Maybe you don't like the CEOs face. Do whatever you want with your own money.

With all those people coming back Ford ought to be able to sell those cars right there, or eat them.
