Murder of Hogan’s Heroes Actor Might Be Solved Monday Night
TV Spy ^ | 11/11/16 | Kevin Eck

Thirty eight years after Bob Crane was murdered, Phoenix Fox-owned station KSAZ may be able to solve the case on live TV.

Crane was the star of Hogan’s Heroes, a comedy show set in World War II that ran six seasons until 1971. Crane’s friend Bob Carpenter was initially suspected of bludgeoning Crane to death with camera tripod, but he was never convicted.

Now, KSAZ reporter John Hook will reveal the results of his one and half year investigation into the case.

The Fox-owned station says the Maricopa County Attorney’s Office allowed Hook to retest the original blood evidence found in Carpenter’s car the day after the murder. Hook is hoping modern DNA techniques can answer the question of who did it.

KSAZ says the results will be revealed Monday night on its 9 p.m. newscast

All the actors who played the major Nazi characters on the show were Jewish and all had served in the US Army or assisted the US Army overseas in some way. That was info I learned from one of the retro TV sites that broadcasts the old show. Everyone involved with Hogan’s Heroes was very proud of that fact.

And I thought it was Fraulein Helga, who was jealous of Crane’s new girlfriend.

If all German women looked more like her than Frau Linkmeier, there may have been an incentive for our boys to turn in their weapons for guns.

Colonel Klink was played by Werner Klemperer who emigrated with his family from Cologne Germany in 1935, joined the US Army in WW II and served in Hawaii, joining the Army Special Services Unit touring the Pacific, entertaining the troops for the rest of the war.

I think it was General Bulkhalter who did it.

Nah, the General was competent, but cantankerous and sarcastic. I think he actually liked Hogan a bit, because he knew that Hogan also saw that Klink was a fool.

Now, Hochstetter... he was the one with a volcanic temper.

;-)

Master Sergeant Schultz was played by John Banner (born Johann Banner in Vienna Austria), emigrated after Hitler annexed Austria in 1938, joined the US Army Air Corps in 1942 as a supply sergeant and served for the rest of the war, through 1945.

its interesting that in about 20 yrs following a major World War and Korea, we were watching sitcoms about it....

I wonder how our parents thought about it...or the people that were slaughtered in the gas chambers...

but I watched it too....and it was funny..

The film ‘Auto Focus’ is a truly creepy film. I recommend it for its portrayal of the seedy side of Crane’s life. I saw it in the cineplex and remember at one point I gasped out loud and was sitting there with my hand over my mouth, totally in shock. There’s also a paperback that was published as a tie-in with the book and it was a very good read.

IIRC, Werner Klemperer’s dad Otto (a symphony conductor), nearly disowned his son over that TV role - until he saw that it was a total mockery of the Nazis.

All of the major German roles in Hogan’s Heroes were played by Jews.

Robert Clary was a Holocaust Survivor, who still gives lectures on how life was during that time.
