Former Attorney General Eric Holder joins Bill Maher to discuss the aftermath of Donald Trump's election and calls for the abolition of the Electoral College.

Holder said the U.S. should elect presidents via popular vote instead of through electoral votes. The former attorney general said there is a simple solution, "we have to just abolish the electoral college."

First of all, it would take a Constitutional Amendment to do so, not just a Leftist bullhorn.

Secondly, the Electoral College is one of the wonderful constitutional devices that implements America’s unique representative, republican, and decentralized form of government. Technically, America is not a democracy which tends towards centralization and the “tyranny of the majority”. America is a republic, giving powerful voice to the minority as well as the majority. The Electoral College implements decentralized power by appointing a representative number of state electors throughout the country as Steve Feinstein explains below.

“Thank G-d we have [the Electoral College], or else California and N.Y. would determine every election. Every time....[T]he Electoral College brilliantly smooths out the variances in the voting proclivities among states and regions. Farmers in the middle of the country and importers and exporters on the shore get roughly equal say, as do Madison Ave. execs and factory workers in Tennessee...without the Electoral College, the country’s entire population is subject to the disproportionate voting preferences of the few most populous states.”

In Chesterton’s admonition, you don’t remove a fence when you don’t know the historical reason for its existence in the first place.

Eric Holder: "Abolish The Electoral College"

No, that mechanism, from the wisdom of our founders, just saved our country. It wouldn't even have been that close without rampant voting and election fraud.

Establish voter eligibility rules and voter ID, bipartisan counting panels mandates.

Abolish Election Fraud!

Fair enough...amend the Constitution. It ain't easy but it's been done before.Just have it pass both Houses of Congress (can't recall the required margin) and then have three quarters of the states' legislatures approve it (again, can't recall the required margins).

Given that the Electoral College is particularly well respected in a good number of smaller states it would be mighty difficult to get three quarters.

Mighty difficult.

A representative republic and a democracy are two altogether dissimilar ideas.

The idea of the electoral college was designed so as NOT to let the “popular vote” control elections. In theory, it is up to the state legislatures to appoint representatives to the electoral college, much as the original intent of the Constitution was to have the state legislatures appoint two Senators from each state, to represent the interests of each of the several States, as it was before the 17th Amendment was passed by the Progressives during the reign of Woodrow Wilson.

A “pure” democracy is not the panacea it is made out to be. It turns into a “mobocracy” within s very short period of time, with no recourse for the minority short of violent attacks on the majority.

Especially when the majority passes such restrictions on the minority so as to reduce them to a permanently subservient position. Dialogue does not occur spontaneously. Thugs do not seek the opinions or suggestions of their victims.

The Electoral College SAVED US from Gore (had he won, we wouldn’t be here in our forum right now), and is in the process of SAVING US from what can only be called a One Party DICTATORSHIP, which is what was coming with uncontested control of the courts (and thereby fully neutralizing Congress).

If you asked a guy from Mars if the Electoral College made sense, he’d say that it looks really silly and useless. If you ask an American that actually wants to leave his kids a country somewhat similar to the one he grew up in, he’d now say it was a GODSEND.

I would be willing to trade the Electoral college for real ballot security that eliminates fraud and guarantees one man one vote.

But I don’t want any of the “comprehensive “ crap. We get the ballot security first, and let it run for a few cycles. Then we can talk about the EC.

CNN predicts that Trump will win the imaginary “popular vote” when all voted are tallied.

Then what, Holder? More violence from you losers?

Holder should run for president of Liberia.

Good points. I agree that valid registration and voting must be first.

I learned about the Electoral College in high school. It’s sort of been that way for a while. If dems that there was a problem with it, they should have done something about it.

I guess Eric Holder was leaning about then black panthers, Saul Alinsky, etc., while we were learning basic things about our nation’s history.

If you think you have to change it, you must do that before the election. You can’t have the election and then change the rules.
