The Massachusetts Turnpike is in uncharted water as EZ Pass has replaced cash along the states turnpike system and many toll collectors have been laid off.
In a world where many systems have gone electronic from payment for movies to parking, it was only a matter of time before the personless, electronic system eventually took over toll roads, as well. Along the Massachusetts Turnpike, it happened this weekend with toll collectors working their last shifts and the state moving quickly to tear down the booths where collections happened for decades.
According to the Boston Globe, the new cashless collections system began on Friday at 10 p.m. and will now be the permanent vehicle for toll collection and yes, the pun was intentional.

How does that work if someone doesn’t have EZ Pass?
Each toll gantry has cameras that can take a picture of the driver’s license plate, and from that, a bill can be sent to him through the mail.
"'Big Brother' is watching you!"
The Mark of the Beast... "don't leave home without it!"
Winner - and a lot of it they may not be doing on purpose. But that’s where it will all end up.
The real question about all this is DID THEY FIRE THE TOLL BOOTH PERSONNEL then? Or just put them off on other trumped up jobs?
On the Golden Gate Bridge, they snap a photo of the back of your car, then using the license plate number mail you an invoice. It is really slick and actually works well.
I don’t know if California DMV works, with other state DMVs to mail invoices to out-of-state tourists.
The EZ-pass only system has been in place in Illinois for awhile. Massachusetts isn’t breaking new ground.
Other Trumped-up jobs...LOL.
My first thought, too. These jobs didn’t get sent overseas and they aren’t coming back. Just another case of tech displacing people in mostly useless, dead-end jobs. I’ve often marveled at the fact they could actually find people willing to sit in a toll booth and collect dirty cash from strangers all the while breathing filthy, horribly polluted air and suffering non-stop noise. What a yuck job.
Now they man the mailrooms of the toll road dunners.
Trumped up???
That’s YUGE! BIG-LEAGUE! INCREDIBLE AND UNBELIEVABLE!
OK, I’ll shut up now.
“Each toll gantry has cameras that can take a picture of the drivers license plate, and from that, a bill can be sent to him through the mail.”
But the bill is not just for the toll. The bill includes a big fat admin fee. Here in VA, I think the fee is around $12. I would expect that John Law can give you a healthy piece of paying paper when he pulls you over for some other infraction and finds you without an ezpass. The signs requiring the expass device are yuge and series.
Let me make sure I understand—a tourist driving through Virginia is supposed to have an Ezpass?
I’ve had two comments about the use of ‘trumped up’.....if you will read my comment you will find that I didn’t capitalize the word (which has been around a very long time).

I used to rail against toll transponders, but now figure that there are massive license plate scanning databases extant. There’s no escaping being tracked these days.
What does bug me is that the transponders were specifically designed to omit feedback - i.e. beep or something when you get charged.
Correct, everything is tracked now. If Hillary had won,I had estimated we would be under the rule of the antichrist and the global system within a couple of years. Now that Trump is about to assume power, that may be delayed. However, we never know what is going to happen. Christians should remain vigilant. And rely on God.
