The virus, and fear, took over the U.S. on Nov. 8, and this is how we ended up with Donald Trump as president-elect.
The only photograph I have with James Alan McPherson is from the beginning of the Obama era; it turned out to be far more symbolic than I could have imagined.
In the picture, Jims students flank him, a fairly mixed group of mostly smiling faces: three white women, two black men, a black woman, a Korean-American man, a white man. The lone white man in the workshop was named Roman, and his arm is crisscrossed with mine behind Jims back: my left hand perched on Jims left shoulder, Romans right hand on Jims right shoulder. It seemed, at the time, a picture of true American unificationblack and white overlapping in an intimate embrace of the first black American to win a Pulitzer Prize for fiction.
There was, at the time we posed for that picture, a current of energy and hope that infused my perception of the world around me. The election of a black man with an African father and a nontraditional name engendered in many of us what Bomani Jones recently deemed a qualified optimism: Just maybe if youre so good at what you do, in spite of that contempt, people might be willing to vote for youor, on the more local scale, to support you regardless of your background or skin color when you demonstrate talent and ability.

Self-preservation is the most basic human right there is.
White people are awesome!
It couldn’t possibly be that they overplayed the race card and embraced a set of policies that are antithetic to American values.
All across the media this morning it was the uneducated whites that got trump elected
I clicked on the link. Every word of the article was pure crap.
Notice how the left can be comletely racist against whites.
Allthe stuff they cant say about anyone else, they save up that bile for releasing on whites.
So what if any racial group votes in a way they think is good for them.
It is also extremely racist of them to regard all whites as one big homogenous bloc. Its racist to docthat to other races, all indians are drunks, all blacks are felons, all hispanics are illegals, all asiansmare bad drivers. Butmthey proudly say all whites are racit and ignore their own racist hypocrisy.
This is the pc bs special, privileged class crap that must end.
“If I am not for myself, who will be for me?” - Rabbi Hillel
This is immediately followed by, “But if I am only for myself, who am I?”
In today’s context, I would say that we have been bombarded ( in content ) by the second of these maxims, to the exclusion of the first. And yet, it is easy to remember the first, or even reinvent it.
Sounding a little genocidal there Skippy. Let’s try it this way: “Blackness in America Is a Virus Whose Sole Purpose Is Preserving Itself.” You like that? Thanks for outing yourself.
I just perused the above article. 3 women, a Korean, a Black etc. Just what does this person thinks America is?
Good Grief, these “intellectuals” have become so “interested” in the mix of people in America, it’s pitiful! We’ve always been a mix. How in the world do these “intellectuals” think we became what we are, before they decided to become communists and look to see how many of us are green, blue, brown, yellow, pink or something in between. These so called intellectuals, give me a pain in the area I put the butt to the pillow.
Very funny! Is that why conservatives backed Clarence Thomas and Allen West and the left pulled out all the dirty tricks to destroy them?
Hey TD
SAY IT LOUD
IM WHITE & I’M PROUD
white people save the world again :)
Life is tenacious, it will not be denied!
But blackness is a-okay.
What does T.D. represent? I have some ideas.
This is exactly the type of thinking/treatment that got Trump elected.
