Absorbing the Impossible [Dowd Has Lucid Moment]
www.nytimes.com ^ | 11/09/2016 | Maureen Dowd

Posted on 11/09/2016 11:59:47 AM PST by Red Badger

I sat watching in astonishment. The one who couldn’t bear to show up to concede was not, as expected, Donald Trump, but Hillary Clinton.

[SNIP]

The Republican establishment couldn’t stand Trump. The Democratic establishment mocked him. The Republican nominee didn’t even really seem to have much of a campaign. He spent more on “Make America Great” hats than on polling. When I visited his campaign headquarters this summer, there were more pictures, paintings and cardboard cutouts of Trump around than Trump advisers. If you don’t count Newt Gingrich — and I don’t — only one major political historian, Allan Lichtman, had predicted that Trump would win.

But then the impossible happened. As Salena Zito had presciently written in The Atlantic: “The press takes him literally, but not seriously; his supporters take him seriously, but not literally.”

When the Apocalypse came at midnight and the TV analysts — even on Fox — were scrambling to reverse their analyses and justify their bad polling data; and the stock exchanges had to temporarily halt the futures market because it was falling too fast, and the world was spinning off its axis, I called my conservative brother to see what the heck was going on.

“As flawed a candidate as Trump was, he had his finger on the pulse,” Kevin said. “The polls were off because nobody wanted to admit that they were going to vote for him. But it’s a populist revolt and a lot of people believed in Trump’s message: too much regulation, too much government. The whole thing is a bunch of guys getting rich on Capitol Hill and not paying attention to the people who elected them. They stay in Congress a couple years, then move on to K Street and call on the same people who replaced them.”

Dowd called her conservative brother?

Might be hope for her, after all.

Yes, she was bewildered by what was happening, and needed him to actually fill her in on reality....................

Well that’s because you are a dumb cow.

Say what you will about Maureen Dowd...but she explicitly acknowledges that the Clintons are sleazy felons worthy of prosecution, even if that may never come to pass. I’m willing to give her credit for being intellectually honest about them. She wrote a column in the 1990s rhetorically asking whether Bill and Hillary were in league with the Devil, saying that it would go a long way to explain how the Clintons managed to prosper and profit, while so many others in their circle of acquaintances met terrible fates.

As Salena Zito had presciently written in The Atlantic: “The press takes him literally, but not seriously; his supporters take him seriously, but not literally.”

Great point.

Maureen should let her brother Kevin write her column. Sounds like he has some sense.

I never would have guessed Maureen Dowd’s brother would provide the most succinct response to media-driven fears. Thanks for sharing MoDo!

Ok. I will hand it to her. When she puts her mind to it, she can write, unlike a lot of the hacks around.

This is perfect:

Hillary’s closing line in the campaign was that she was the only thing standing between her and the abyss. But to my conservative family, Hillary was the abyss while Donald was the baseball bat to smash Washington.

The only thing wrong with that is that a baseball bat is smooth and lightweight. It bruises. I think more of a flail (chain and spiked ball).

Oh, and this part she has wrong to:

“After months of chatter about the implosion of the Republican Party, we are instead witnessing the obviation of the Democratic Party.”

As Trump said, we get it about the Democrats. We know what they are after. It is the Republicans we don't get.

GOPe delenda est. I want a new party, with a new name, after taking out the trash left by the old party and cleaning up the stale beer smell.

>>but she explicitly acknowledges that the Clintons are sleazy felons worthy of prosecution<<

And, yet, prefers Clinton over Trump as our next POTUS. Good Lord! I’ve known my share of irrational people, but this goes beyond that to the level of certifiably insane. Surprised her brother still tries to inform her obviously diseased mind. Can you imagine a lifetime trying to love a sibling so bereft of a reasoning mind and moral or ethical compass? Maybe he’s grateful that she doesn’t have anything more deadly at hand than a computer keyboard and an internet connection. Dangerous mind.

“Absorbing the Impossible [Dowd Has Lucid Moment]”

No such luck according to the article - it was her brother Kevin that has the lucid moments - she’s still totally clueless, lost in the fog.

“The Clintons remind me of the Universal horror movies where you thought the monster was dead and then the monster would show up in a bad sequel. I’m glad now that they’re finally gone.”

Worth repeating...

To: Red Badger; All

“Trump came onstage at the Hilton looking subdued — and perhaps terrified?”

After reviewing the video of Trumps entrance, it seems to me that the look on his face was that of overwhelming emotion; he had the look of a man who had dreamed big and against all odds achieved the dream.

It was a look of humility and gratitude; as if he were simply waking from the dream - only to find out that the dream had become reality...

Well, I clicked on the link, and now I have to de-louse myself, having gone to the NYT website.
Thanks though. Some (a few) reasonable comments by Dowd, but I agree with other posters - No, Trump was not "terrified" when he gave his acceptance speech. No, Trump is not a racist. This is just a projection from leftists who use this universal slur against anyone that they disagree. And besides, it was/is totally legitimate to question Obama's eligibility for the office. Obama never actually produced a real birth certificate, and having posted a forgery raised red alarms.

Anyways, a semi-sane Dowd article, but still throwing out some insults based on projections, and not facts.
