If government officials follow established procedure, and use government computers (only) and stay behind firewalls, and get government-mandated patches and updates in a timely fashion, and go through appropriate government Help Desks when trouble appears ... if these basic steps are followed, then disaster (however you define disaster) becomes less likely.
However ... if you hire some schmuck to set up a secret server in your bathroom, and if you rely on a staff with no IT skills at all, and if you make stuff up as you go along ... you just never know what’s gonna happen to your data. That’s the price you pay for going outside the established process.

It’s technically sound, but it doesn’t jive with what Huma said she did. She said she forwarded e-mails from the State Department to her Yahoo account. This is saying it was a massive backup.
I know some have said she might’ve synced up her iphone to the laptop. But that would still be a copy just of anything she forwarded herself, not everything on the Clinton server.
The third theory, which seems possible given the massive 650,000 number (if accurate), is that she knew what she was doing and bulk copied classified material intentionally for “insurance.”
Believe it or not, the FBI employs IT experts. They might even know how IMAP works.

You can use IMAP with Exchange server while using Exchange accounts. I know this for a fact, because various computers I support have this very setup. This is at a major research university.
The media is aware of it, and deliberately and intentionally chooses, with full awareness, to suppress it.
