Ford idles Mustang plant amid slow sales

Ford Motor Co. is idling its Flat Rock Assembly Plant, where the Dearborn automaker builds the Ford Mustang and the revived Lincoln Continental.

The site will be idled for one week, Ford spokeswoman Kelli Felker said in an email.

"We continue to match production with demand," Felker said in response to a query about whether the idling was due to slower Mustang sales. "Mustang remains the top seller in its segment in total and retail sales..."

Sales of all Ford-brand cars fell by double-digits in the U.S. in September, as Americans continue to gravitate toward crossovers and SUVs, but the Mustang's decline was particularly abrupt. Its sales dove 32 percent to 6,429 units on the month.

Through the first nine months of the year, sales of the Mustang are down 9 percent to 87,258 units. During that same time, sales of all Ford cars were down 13 percent to 525,869 units...

Through the first nine months of the year, sales of the Camaro are down 11 percent to 54,535 units, and sales of the Challenger dipped 2 percent to 51,141 units during that time.

it was idled because a feminazi discovered their were balls in the engine and it was determined that ball berrings are sexist. (/s)

“I test drove the GT Blackout addition. It was $41K. “

The Blackout is a $149 option. I bought the 2016 GT fully loaded with performance package for $36k last July. That was with $6000 in discounts and rebates with 36 month zero interest.

I loved my 2008 Bullet but the 2016 is really nice!

The tech angle is something I’m amazed by. These little pocket rockets are amazing. Sounds like yours doesn’t exactly live up to that name, but it gets you there. That all that’s needed.

Mine still gets a move-on when I need it to. It doesn’t do it by the old muscle car standards to be sure, but I can get out of the way of trouble if I need to.

I’m happy with my Mariner, but I do wish it had a bit more of the technical gadgets today’s cars do.

It has navigation, very adequate. It has a six cd bank. It doesn’t have blue tooth, but I’m not a big music guy, so that’s okay.

It does have the back up warning system, which I use constantly, so it does have some of the later gadgets.

It has the hybrid mileage reporting system and helps too. I use them. It taught me how to drive more reasoned, economically.

Thanks for your report.

“Engine power improvements in recent years, more crowded roads, leaves a world whereby a “muscle” coupe or convertible is not very practical, or easy to enjoy.”

I ‘enjoy’ my ‘muscle car’ every minute I drive it. And it is not just muscle but handling also.

This one had all the bells and whistles. Two tone Leather, Nav, large touchscreen with backup camera, projection side mirrors, blind spot warning system, interior mood lighting, shaker radio, ect.... maybe they are more expensive in FL.

“maybe they are more expensive in FL.”

” It was $41K”

MSRP? Ford.com says fords should sell for invoice before rebates and dealer discounts.

Mine was $42k msrp .... I paid $36k with 36 month zero interest.

>>My generation had REAL station wagons. Those you all call station wagons now are just “wanna be’s”.

I’m 54. I learned to drive in a1973 Impala station wagon that was so big it had its own zip code! It had the same footprint as a large SUV today, so when I call an SUV a station wagon, I know what I mean.

There is no Toyota or Honda that can come close to my Shelby GT500.

“My generation had REAL station wagons. “

hmmmm.. my wife’s ‘station wagon’ has four-wheel, drive, double-low, downhill assist, navigation and will go where no ‘real station wagon’ has ever gone.

Not sure. This was last fall at the beginning of the model year. They were top dollar then. Since the 2017s are out now and idling the plant, I bet you could get a pretty good discount.

Now sure what you mean. The 2017’s were rolling out in July when I bought my 2016. Even the the new 2017’s were selling for less than invoice with rebates.

At 54 you’re just a baby. I’m talking about the wagons we had in the middle 1960’s. Yes, they had their own zip codes. My son was around nine and we hauled his entire band around including a full drum set, trombone, trumpet, and other instruments plus all the kids. Everything back of the front seat was treated as a huge trunk.

The tech angle is something I’m amazed by.

I'm amazed by it too but to tell you the truth, I only use or know how to use half the stuff it has. But I'm slowly learning as necessity requires.

The first winter I had my last Focus, after I had left my driveway after a snow fall, a light came coming on as I was driving down the street. I panicked and drove back home and pulled out the owners manual to figure out what the warning light was.

Turned out it was the traction control light which indicated that my tires were losing traction on the snow and ice....LOL!

Then a couple weeks ago with my new Focus, another warning light went on and I again had to check the manual to see what was up. Turned out to be a warning that I was losing air pressure in one of my tires...........

Yes, this tech stuff IS amazing and I still haven't figured out how to connect PANDORA (an internet music station) which is on my smart phone (I'm not smart) to what appears to be an option on my vehicle's audio system...........Oh well, I'll do it one day.

I test drove s 2016 GT in Sept 2015. They didn’t have any “leftovers”. They were sold out. Sounds like this year they have leftovers which they would give bigger discounts to clear the lot. Sounds like you got a great deal.

When I was there this past spring for routine maintenance they had a $36K 2015 F150 marked down to $19K. It was one of two left.

I need to stop talking to you. I’m going to end up with a payment!!:)

Apples and oranges. Those are sports cars, not muscle cars.

I wanted a specific mustang. I had given up on getting the 2016 but then one popped up on ford.com inventory to be shipped to my area. Probably the last one like it for 2016 as the assembly lines were moving the 2017s.

No recaro seats as I am in Florida and the electric and AC cooled seats are nice.

Did they put it into sport or Track mode for you?

A world of difference in throttle response.

GT500 = muscle car GT350 = Sports car

GT350s are the class of the field in their series btw.
