Major Hurricane Matthew Briefing Situation Overview
...THIS IS NOW A WORST CASE STORM SURGE SCENARIO...
Catastrophic Damage is Anticipated for Coastal Areas.
Major Hurricane Matthew is still expected to move DANGEROUSLY CLOSE the Florida First Coast and Southeast Georgia Coast Friday through Friday night into Saturday with catastrophic impacts expected along and near the coast.
A major hurricane has not impacted this area in 118 years, since October 2nd 1898. There is NO local living memory of the potential of this event. If a direct landfall occurs this will be unlike any hurricane in the modern era. . The western eyewall is expected to move along a portions of the coast with sustained winds 115 to 125 mph and gusts in the most affected areas! Winds will be higher in high rise structures in Downtown Florida possibly strong Category 4 to Category 5 intensity!
Some of the lowest barrier islands will be completely overtopped with large battering wave and life threatening flooding. Barrier islands are likely to breached and it is extremely possible that new inlets will be cut in the worst affected areas.
Please, Please heed the advice of public and emergency management officials. 40 people in New York and New Jersey did not heed these warning during Sandy and died in the storm surge! This will be a MUCH Greater surge than Sandy had along the New Jersey Shore!
I mean buildings and infrastructure.
We love our storms here, but that is because our buildings are designed to handle them. I know that you can build sheet metal buildings in such a way that is hardened against wind up to certain speeds. And certain additional bracing increase it a certain amount.
Mine is designed to withstand 120 mph, which is overkill for rural KY.
Apparently this hurricane will continue up the east coast.I am afraid. My faith must be too weak. I can handle emergency, but this waiting is so difficult.
3 of my children work for WalMart which has issued closings. No traffic on streets after 10 p.m.
We wait to know if we are to evacuate. Two of my 2 children work for hospital emergency services. My husband was sent to Chicago for work, but has gotten one of the last seats to arrive at Jacksonville 5:00 p.m.

Good thing I left McIntosh County 2.5 years ago. My old condo will probably end up underwater, assuming it doesn’t get blown away.

A NOAA station at Settlement Point on Grand Bahama recently reported a sustained wind of 45 mph (72 km/h) and a wind gust of 48 mph (78 km/h). A National Ocean Service station at Lake Worth Pier, Florida, recently reported a sustained wind of 40 mph (65 km/h) and a wind gust of 47 mph (76 km/h).
My prayers are definitely with you. Our daughter and her family live in Saint Marys. Currently, she is in Seattle as an expert witness in a trial. They would not allow her to get back home until the whole thing is over. Our SIL is home with the grandchildren and will have to ride the thing out because of the medical condition of our youngest grand daughter. And UPS did not deliver today her medical supplies so he and the doctor are trying to have a pharmacy out of Jacksonville send some by courier so she won’t run out of stuff in the middle of the hurricane or right after it.
What got my attention is that this beast will linger offshore through one or more high tide cycles, like Sandy in 2012.
Except that Sandy was only a tropical storm.
We have known for days this was likely coming.
There has been broad talk about it. Evacuation orders have been issued. Top rate warnings have been issued.
When this is over, I don’t want anyone saying they just didn’t know.
Everyone has been warned. Everyone had a chance to know if they were paying any attention at all.

Well. Crap. One of my coworker’s sister is in JAX and has two (2) small children. The are millennial idiots and plan on a block party since this is the first hurricane they have ever experienced. They’ve only been FL residents for a few years and have no idea how dumb an idea it is to stay.
CITY of ST. AUGUSTINE ISSUED UNDERWAY FOR MANDATORY EVACUATION. Currently 1.5 million people evacuating from FL.
