Hurricane Matthew
NOAA/NHC ^ | 1 October 2016 | NOAA/NHC

Posted on 10/01/2016 7:00:34 AM PDT by NautiNurse

Hurricane Matthew is big, bad and just downright scary, and we await the long anticipated sharp turn northward. Jamaica is completing final storm preparations. All interests in the Eastern U.S. and Bahamas should be carefully watching the track of Mighty Matthew.

Ripped straight from the NHC Discussion page:

Matthew remains south of a low-to mid-level ridge over
the western Atlantic. The dynamical models forecast this ridge to
weaken over the next 72 hours as a mid- to upper-level trough develops
over the Gulf of Mexico. This evolution should cause Matthew to turn
northwestward after 24 hours and northward by 48-72 hours. The guidance
generally agrees with this scenario. However, there is a spread between
the GFS forecast of landfall in Jamaica and eastern Cuba and the ECMWF
forecast landfall in southwestern Haiti. The guidance becomes more
divergent after 72 hours.

It has been a very long time since we have witnessed a Category 4-5 storm that may threaten U.S interests. Godspeed to all in the storm path.

Out to sea’s where it needs to be. NO one needs death and destruction a-la Katrina.

I tend to favor the ECMWF - it nailed Sandy days out, and Sandy came from this general part of the world. If that happens, good news for the US, horrible news for Haiti.

Glad I went to Atlantis in the Bahamas last winter. I wouldn't want to be there now.

If it happens, you can be sure that 0bama will get a pass - they’ll figure out a way to blame Bush. You know, Groundhog Days!

Based on this coming Monday’s forecast, I will pull both boats. I still have vivid memories about Frances and Gene, here in Ft. Pierce.

Hurricanes are the only negative attribute of living in South Florida. I can deal with the heat.

NN, I learned a valuable lesson during Andrew in ‘92. You don’t have to be in the path of a killer storm to see local impacts on your stores. I live in central FL and the refugees from Dade county ran for their lives with what they could carry. Once they arrived inland, they hit our stores and cleaned out the food, survival supplies, gasoline and medicine from pharmacies.

As Charlie approached with a Tampa Bay projected path, I warned all the locals to prepare as the refugees would come inland and clean out the stores. Charlie came through central FL, making a direct hit and we had the refugees, too. On top of that, we didn’t recover here and 2 weeks later had a direct hit from Francis, and two weeks after that, Jeanne.

My point is... even if you aren’t in the path, prepare as if you are. Food/Water, fuel and meds.

What I am waiting for is- IF it goes up the eastern seaboard- New Yorkers to cry ‘disaster’ if they get an inch of rain and wind above 30mph. They will claim they were hit by a Cat4-5 Matthew! I don’t wish this on anyone( well, maybe the Clintons) but saying ‘Sandy’ in the same breath as a real Cat 4-5 is beyond laughable.

I expect some fairly dire intense reporting from Miss Shepherd Smith . . . probably be a hoot!

Nope. The Bushes and Clintons will conspire to blame Trump.

Your voice of experience is rich with wisdom. If SE FL gets an order to evacuate, the entire state of FL is affected by the relocation of populous Miami-Dade-Palm Beach counties. Local Sarasota Wx guy suggested two days ago that we check our storm supplies. He is not an alarmist, and he got my attention.

I learned recently that if folks need to cancel Bahamas vacation plans due to hurricane, by law they are to receive a prompt cancellation refund.

Around here, you get cheapest rates during hurricane season and play roulette when a storm is coming. Different cultures, for sure.

We are about 1 hour east of Cedar Key Fl, the storm last month knocked power off for 3 days. Miserable situation, no water either. I want no part of Matthew! Florida is narrow & a storm like that can create havoc throughout the state. Matt go away!

Anyone who has experienced a REAL hurricane considers the histrionics of those in the Northeast real entertainment. Noreasters are stronger than Sandy! What was a Cat 4-5 down south raining on you and making stop signs move is NOT being ‘slammed’ by a hurricane! I imagine every tv newscaster in NYC is already staking out their corner and stop sign/tree( wearing rainboots for that ankle deep floodwater) in the event Matthew heads north of the Bahamas. Perhaps they’ll evacuate NYC!!!
