When my family moved back to Virginia in 1966 your statement would have been an accurate one. While the actual boundaries of D.C. have not changed the Maryland & Virginia suburbs grew 100 fold by the time I left for good in 2004. All due to growth in the government, which then grew other supporting infrastructures.

I-395 used to be 2 lanes in and 2 lanes out, which had been 1 lane in each direction having been only recently upgraded to 2 lanes, into Washington on the Virginia side.

It is now 4 lanes in each direction narrowing to 3 lanes as you get close to entering D.C., with 2 reversible center lanes for HOV commuters. Traffic was already a nightmare by 2004. I can only imagine what it must be like now.

It certainly should have been. When I worked for the DOD, I had to report all financial dealings that *might* be construed has having a conflict of interest. Updates were required every year.
