Three Walmart workers in McDonough, Georgia refused to decorate a thin blue line cake for a police officers retirement party because they said it was racist.
A number of my Georgia readers alerted me to the story and on Saturday night I spoke directly with the police officers daughter. She asked that I not divulge her name and Ive agreed to honor her request.
I was so shocked, she told me. I didnt know what to do or say or anything. I was trying not to lose my temper or make a scene.
The baker told me the blue line cake was racist
Police Officer's Daughter
For the record, Walmart has confessed that most of her allegations are true. Ill have more on that a bit later in this column.
The police officers daughter went to the Walmart on Willow Drive on Sept. 22 to order a flag for her fathers retirement party. He was leaving the force after 25-years on the job.
She showed the bakers a photograph of the police officers flag - the black and white version of Old Glory with a blue line.
One of the bakers told me the design could be perceived as racist and nobody feels comfortable decorating the cake, the police officers daughter told me.
As an alternative, she suggested a chocolate-frosted cake with a horizontal, frosted blue line.
But that design was also rejected by Walmarts cake decorator.
She said, I dont feel comfortable doing this, the cops daughter told me. I asked her, Is there something wrong with cops?
After being rejected for a third time, the 21-year-old told the bakers, Ill find another bakery, thank you.
She was much more polite than I wouldve been, folks.
I was disappointed, she told me. I go to Walmart all the time at least once a week spend hundreds of dollars. I just wanted to make my dad a cake to show how much i appreciated him.
A friend of the family posted an item about the incident on Facebook and it wasnt long before the Walmart store manager called the police officers wife and daughter and apologized.
He said he was so sorry, the daughter told me. He offered to make the cake free of charge and he gave me a $50 gift card.
A Walmart corporate spokesperson confirmed most of the story.
Our goal is to always take care of customers, the spokesperson told me. But, sometimes we misstep. Were glad we were able to connect with the family to apologize and make this right.
Walmart did not say if one of their associates called the cake racist.
I can confirm an associate made a mistake that has since been corrected for the customer, the spokesperson told me.
So how did Walmart right their wrong? The answer to that question is going to curdle your Fruit Loops, folks.
The manager offered to make and decorate a new cake. But there was just one problem the cake decorators refused to comply.
So the manager told me that he would decorate it but it looked terrible, the police officers daughter said. It doesnt look professional.
Ive attached photographs of Walmarts handiwork its absolutely embarrassing and unacceptable.
I work in retail, the officers daughter told me. If I didnt want to deal with a customer and said No I would get fired.
Unfortunately, her fathers retirement party is Sunday night - so theres no time to go elsewhere.
It irritates me that in Charlotte, North Carolina, the Walmart was looted and the cops were protecting them, she said. And you cant make a cake for the people who are protecting you?
Walmart needs to make this right and they can start by delivering a professionally decorated cake to the police officers family.
The three cake decorators need to be told: either decorate the cake or be fired.
Just because Walmart is the home of low prices, doesnt mean they have to hire a bunch of low class, anti-cop bigots.
I think everyone is Blacked out at this point. I know I am. It’s gone beyond fatigue to the point of I don’t give a damn.
My girlfriend would have made that cake. She has made many specialty cakes for various people, including a Walking Dead cake and a leg lamp cake, such as the lamp in A Christmas Story. She has no issues with race or occupation. The Wal*Mart jagoffs should have been terminated.
The three employees should immediately be fired. I’m sure they could find new jobs in NFL Commissioner’s office.
Those kinds of situations have a 2 step solution:
1. Demand to talk the the supervisor. If no resolution,
2. Call corporate HQ and ask to speak to the administrator in charge of that that division.
==
I did that with a software company that shorted my order in the early 90s. After a month of wrangling with CS agents (I kept a list of names of each one I talked to), I finally decided to go up the chain of command. Smarta** supervisor did not help. When I asked to speak to her department manager, she said no one else was there, that she was in charge, and she hung up.
About a hour later SHE got a call from the Corporate Vice President in charge of that division.
30 minutes later, Corporate called me and told me my shorted order is being shipped out that day.
Even Smarta** supervisors DO have bosses, as that one found out.
go into the same place and ask for a Black Lives Matter cake. See what happens.
Wal-Mart, willing slaves on the Obama Plantation, should be sued. Big Business crony capitalists.
I do not understand why they just dont fire the scumbas
They may be a protected class of cotizen...
Would love to be a juror for the pending lawsuit. Walmart could use new ownership.
Even more aggravating that worthless football players trying to influence high school athletes. Walmart, should have fired the employees, had they denied someone (black) anything they would have been in a NY minute.
We had it awhile back with Walmart. NOT going to shop there any more. Don’t care if it costs more. I’m not going to be told to screw off by anybody anywhere I am trying to purchase everyday product from. Walmart can go to ‘H’. Most other large retailers handle the same products, and the savings aren’t that much.
...AND my lawyer would stipulate a $1 million “donation” by Wal-Mart to the Policemans Benevolent Fund or equivalent.
Just because Walmart is the home of low prices, doesnt mean they have to hire a bunch of low class, anti-cop bigots.
I just wanted to make my dad a cake to show how much i appreciated him.
^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
There’s nothing stopping her from “making” a cake for her father.
I would get my cake elsewhere.
...at the school where my sister teaches, all the power is now with the little darlings. They can do no wrong. Teachers can do no right.
“When an employee outright defies you, you have to make a decision... do you walk them out the door, or do you give them the power to defy you anytime they want?”
...and get your car keyed (or burned) or worse if you send them packing. Manager knew it. Took the easy way out. Family should have gone to corporate and left the manager out of it when it got to the half assed cake.
There's really not much to be gained by a lawsuit.
A better choice would be for every uniformed police officer in the vicinity of McDonough, GA, to make a stop at the WalMart in question
Go to the bakery, and ask for one donut. Pay for it, and then throw it in the trash on the way out.
No need to threaten anyone, at all. The precious snowflakes will freak out, and either quit or get fired when they refuse service.
It is NOT their bakery.. It is Walmart’s bakery. Why on EARTH do people think they have the right to do this? And they do. They feel it is their right.
