What was relevant to the story, though, is that the police apparently observed him with the gun while he was rolling a joint in the SUV. Brandishing a firearm while under the influence of narcotics or alcohol is probably illegal even in the most gun-friendly jurisdiction in America.
Only a fool or someone with a death wish even touches a weapon while stopped by police.
I took a Portland OR police training class and you were taught to shoot even if perp was on the ground holding a knife.
That is actually incorrect....studies have shown officers shoot a white person sooner than they shoot a black person, most likely because when they see a black person they have a split second of worry that it’s going to turn into it what we see in the news lately.
The reliable nutcase, and Vincent D’Onofrio sound-alike, Gene Robinson, can work ‘race’ into anything and everything, minus the known facts.
If stopped by the popo follow their directions, don't grab a gun, don't make any sudden moves and don't resist. It isn't that hard.

No, it really isn’t. I was stopped for speeding for the very first time ever in 40 years of driving. I’ve never had a traffic ticket of any kind.
When the officer stopped me and asked for my license & insurance card, I ASKED him if I had his permission to open my glove box. Then I ASKED him if I had his permission to get out of the vehicle to get my purse that was in the back seat; I couldn’t reach it from the front.
No muss, no fuss. I didn’t get shot or roughed up.
He ran my info, came back to the car and said, “I want you to slow down. We NEED drivers like you on the road; those with NO moving violations, EVER.”
And that was that, and I no longer have a lead foot, LOL!
Jim Crow laws were first passed after the Civil War specifically to keep blacks from having guns. The Second Amendment was included in the Bill of Rights to protect all citizens from tyrannical governments like we have now.
The narrative is white vs black.
Their strategy is to divide. It’s what Obama is doing with black police officers vs white police officers.
