North Korea's new rocket engine too powerful for ICBMs, analyst says

SEOUL, Sept. 23 (UPI) -- A North Korean rocket engine Pyongyang tested earlier this week may be too powerful for the country's intercontinental ballistic missiles, raising speculations it could be used for space development.
Writing on 38 North, a Johns Hopkins University website dedicated to North Korea issues, analyst John Schilling said, "Given the size of the engine, they probably aren't going to build an intercontinental ballistic missile with it."

"China's space launch vehicles, and some of their older ICBMs, use an engine called the YF-20 that is of the same size, performance and general technology as the new North Korean engine," Schilling stated, adding it cannot be assumed China is helping North Korea and that it's possible North Korea is procuring items on the "military side of the dual-use spectrum" from non-state actors.

P!
They'll find a way to use it to execute people on Kim's s--t list.
Dear Leader is going to conquer the Moon! Or maybe he can just annex those old abandoned Nazi lunar bases.
it’s like they’re on some kind of star trek
The Norks were probably able to get a sample Chinese engine of this type to reverse engineer and then made exact copies because that is all they had the resources to do
More power than you need is a nice problem to have when trying to deploy big, heavy 1940s and 1950s style low tech nuclear warheads on long range ICBMs
“cannot be assumed China is helping North Korea and that it’s possible North Korea is procuring items on the “military side of the dual-use spectrum” from non-state actors.”
I’ll bet Lil’ Kim has a Bill Clinton bobble-head doll on his desk so he can get constant, continuous approval from the US
Perhaps they getting their rocket engines where we get them from, for our Atlas missiles. From the Russians
“Given the size of the engine, they probably aren’t going to build an intercontinental ballistic missile with it.”
So they are building an intercontinental ballistic missile with it.
Another and scarier option is that they don’t want to wait to miniaturize their nukes.
If the Norks develop Warp speed and make First Contact, we are screwed.
Kim Jong-un is already at Warped speed.
In a way that makes the most sense.
They launch the rocket, claim Dear Fat Buddy is on board making him the only world leader to go to space!
That was my reaction as well. This "analysis" assumes NK would be launching compact warheads developed in the 70's and 80's, instead of a large heavy one reminiscent of the early atomic age.
Can you say “orbiting nukes”?
Soviets started with large throw-weight launch vehicles.
Makes perfect sense
