The military assesses that the shell fired on a joint US-Iraqi base Tuesday was indeed a chemical weapon, according to Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Gen. Joseph Dunford.
"We assess it to be a sulfur mustard blister agent," Dunford told the Senate Armed Services Committee Thursday. It is the first time the military has confirmed its assessment on the record since CNN reported the development Wednesday.

[ US military chief: ‘Concerning’ mustard attack on US base ]
Mustard GAS, CNN - mustard GAS. Fox was doing this, too.
sigh
Mustard is delicious, yellow or brown and won’t hurt you either.
But what about those dress whites?
The HORROR!
ISIS adheres to NO “rules” of civilized human behavior in peace or war.
Why should anyone be even modestly surprised?
A lack of an immediate unimaginably ruinous and deadly response from our armed forces is a way of Obama green-lighting more chemical attacks carried out by ISIS.

True! A mustard stain is hard to get out! (shoot, I have a shirt some Big Mac sauce dripped on - that is REALLY hard to get out!)
Oh, these “news” channels that seem to be run by five-year-olds. For a LIV audience.
Bush says Saddam has WMD.
Left response: You liar!
Iraq uses WMD against US military.
Obama response: Tee time is at 11.
............... and sitting on our asses?
They are trying to hide this because it is all on the Democrats. Trump will comment on it tomorrow. Hillary will probably blame failed Bush policies.
Either way, Friday news dump.
I thought Bush had lied and there were no weapons of mass destruction?
yep, should have laid waste to source
“Bush says Saddam has WMD.
Left response: You liar!”
Saddam had one of the world’s largest stockpile of (WMD) chemical weapons - and his military was probably the World’s most experienced in using them at the time we invaded.
They were organized and equipped in Soviet style, which was designed around the heavy use of Chemical warfare, and they had made extensive use of them during the Iran/Iraq War, as well as the Anfal Campaign of genocide against the Kurds after the War.
Apparently, Saddam made significant use of (WMD) biological weapons during the Iran/Iraq War as well. The border area between those countries happens to have the highest density of anthrax spores in the wild, of any place on Earth.
A big chunk of the artillery shells that Saddam had stockpiled had (WMD) chemical warheads. They were stashed all over the country for the Fedayeen to use, and a big chunk of the IEDs that we encountered in Iraq (~15%) included a chemical artillery shell. They mostly burn up in the explosion when mixed with high explosive.
Often the bomb makers don’t even know the difference between chem and HE shells - that could have happened here as well.
I wouldn’t be shocked if we provided them for the Iran-Iraq War in the 1980s (when Saddam was our friend before becoming another “Cold War orphan”).
It's the curcumin they use to color it. I use powdered curcumin in my smoothies, it stains my fingers so bad I look like a chain smoker.
“...ISIS adheres to NO rules of civilized human behavior...”
Neither should we.
They want to play with chemicals... let’s introduce them to some more modern stuff.
sounds like more work related violence, since a base was targeted
Good post! I worked with weapons and had some hands on with chemicals. This is a serious ordeal. It don’t take much for the use of them. When Bush has his intel state that they were there, they were. Now we a reseeding the use of them.
There were reports of them when we first went in to Iraq. Later on, when ISIS made its big move into Iraq, there was great concern because they had seized chemical munitions factories. Again, no one said, “Hey! Wait a minute. I thought there were no WMDs?”
This has nothing to do with terrorism and we are baffled as to motive at this time.
