Trump opposes plan for U.S. to cede internet oversight

Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump opposes a long-planned transition of oversight of the internet's technical management from the U.S. government to a global community of stakeholders, his campaign said in a statement on Wednesday.

Congress should block the handover, scheduled to occur on Oct. 1, "or internet freedom will be lost for good, since there will be no way to make it great again once it is lost," Stephen Miller, national policy director for the Trump campaign, said in a statement.

Senator Ted Cruz of Texas, a former presidential primary foe of Trump's who has refused to endorse the real estate developer, has led a movement in congress to block the transition, arguing it could cede control of the internet itself to authoritarian regimes like Russia and China and threaten online freedom.

Technical experts have said those claims are baseless, and that a delay will backfire by undermining U.S. credibility in future international negotiations over internet standards and security.

More from the article:

Publicly proposed in March 2014, the transfer of oversight of the nonprofit Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers, or ICANN, is expected to go forward unless the U.S. Congress votes to block the handover.

A vote to delay the transition may come as an amendment to a temporary spending bill that Congress must pass by Sept. 30 to prevent much of the federal government from shutting down. Congressional negotiators on Wednesday were working to finalize an agreement on the spending package.

VOTE TRUMP 2016!

Do we have the majority in Congress or not?

Honest to God, this stuff infuriates me.

Why do we constantly have to do the heavy lifting.

Those butt-heads back there have one job to do, and they seem to spend their time on everything else.

It’s the Panama Canal all over again.

Americans build it, Democrats give it away.

Oh yeah, we saw how great it was for the EU when they took orders from Brussels.
Who would give us our new orders or restrictions?

Wouldn’t governments in general not like free speech on the internet since free speech often outs their abuse of power and misdeeds?

What is the advantage of the transition of oversight of the internet's technical management from the U.S. government to a global community of stakeholders? Why would we do that?

The internet is not broken, so what is the "fix" about? Sounds like a bad idea.

You mean Algore invented it! Regardless, first thing the “international” overseers would do is to ban any internet ‘speech’ that offends leftist sensibilities or is deemed rathist.

AND WE PAID FOR IT!

Call your Reps...The Internet Protection Act 5418 needs to be voted on to stop funding of the transfer—they did it for past 2 years and should do it again so we can have a Trump administration evaluate the “deal!”

IMO, the temporary spending bill and the blocking of ICANN should be separate bills. Ryan should only agree to bring temporary spending bill for a vote once ICANN is successfully blocked by the House and the Senate and signed by Obama.

Obviously this would only happen if our Republican controlled House and Senate actually had real men/women serving who are Conservative and concerned about the future of America.

Of course, if this were true they wouldn’t have spent more money than we took in and would have taken steps to reduce expenses months ago.

On the other hand, I suspect that Obama doesn’t care whether any additional spending is approved or not or whether the House and Senate vote on ICANN. He will approve the transfer of ICANN regardless of what the House and Senate do.

WRONG Wrong, wrong!!

I talked to HR5418 Sponsor Congressman Sean Duffy R-WI yesterday...

The vote will be this week or first of next week. THIS ACTUALLY IS THE PERFECT TIME TO CALL YOUR CONGRESSMAN AND ASK THEM TO SUPPORT HR5418, and Call SENATORS TO SUPPORT SB3034.

They have stopped this for the past 2 sessions, no reason to assume they cannot stop it again...

I have a suggestion...Instead of being so negative, how about taking a moment to email your Congressman to support `HR5418 instead of shooting down the thread and Trump’s position.
