Former Defense Secretary Bob Gates savaged Donald Trump in a Wall Street Journal op-ed published Saturday, declaring the Republican presidential nominee “unqualified and unfit to be commander-in-chief.”

“At least on national security, I believe Mr. Trump is beyond repair,” Gates wrote. “He is stubbornly uninformed about the world and how to lead our country and government, and temperamentally unsuited to lead our men and women in uniform.”

He offered some gentle criticism of Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton, urging her to be more candid on how she’d deal with China, Russia, North Korea, and Iran. He also suggested she suffers from “credibility issues” on national security and transparency, but he argued she “has time before the election to address forthrightly her trustworthiness, to reassure people about her judgment.”

Gates, now the chancellor at William & Mary, offered no such optimism on Trump, describing the GOP nominee as “naïve and irresponsible” on Russia, “oblivious” on the fight against ISIS, and “willfully ignorant” about foreign relations and the military.

“The world we confront is too perilous and too complex to have as president a man who believes he, and he alone, has all the answers and has no need to listen to anyone,” Gates wrote. “In domestic affairs, there are many checks on what a president can do; in national security there are few constraints. A thin-skinned, temperamental, shoot-from-the-hip and lip, uninformed commander-in-chief is too great a risk for America.”

Gates Makes Impassioned Case for Ending F-22 Program

Gates and Obama killed the F-22 program (we are left with only 187 built instead of 750). Our F-16s and F-15s are 20 - 30 years old.

The F-35 is full of problems, and many of those are inherent in the design and can never be fixed. The F-35 is also not an air superiority fighter.

Why did Gates kill the F-22? Because Obama told him to, because he Barry knew that lacking a solid fighter would almost guarantee we would lose the next major war. Obama also wanted to give Trillions to Illegal Invaders, the Muslim Brotherhood, the lazy, the entitled, the baby murderers, and all the rest of his list of evil grifters. So he screwed over America's defense.

This isn't WW II. We cannot bring a fighter into production in 100 days. The F-22 is dead. To bring it back would take years. We won't have the luxury when Iran, Russia or China make their move against us.

Gates was also an egomaniac, who thought he was the smartest man in the entire defense establishment. If you doubt that, just ask him.

What we have been seeing worldwide, from India to the UK to the US, is the rebellion against the inner circle of no-skin-in-the-game policymaking “clerks” and journalists-insiders, that class of paternalistic semi-intellectual experts with some Ivy league, Oxford-Cambridge, or similar label-driven education who are telling the rest of us 1) what to do, 2) what to eat, 3) how to speak, 4) how to think… and 5) who to vote for.

That Gates joined this crowd is very very sad. Maybe at 72 one has to worry about declining into senility. We seem to be seeing several examples of that.

Sorry Mr. Gates, but nobody is "informed about the world" until they get in the WH and appoint the BEST military advisors. You should know this being a military advisor. What did a short-time Senator Obama know about world affairs or being the CiC? And what has his policies done for US credibility and military might?

Trump has a reputation of appointing the best people for the right job, contrary to Obama purging our best military leaders and appointing Hillary as Secretary of State. We all know where that has led us.

As for shooting from the hip, let me tell you its about leveling. I've gone to shotgun training within the last 2 years and going again with the wife next month. They instructed me to shoot from the hip, under the armpit, and of course from the shoulder. I hit the target from all 3 positions.

While DT does shoot from the hip, he simply needs to level (aim) his comments for affect. Trump could have simply said, "If Hillary is against guns, then maybe she should instruct her security detail to disarm". There was no need for him to go further and say, "...and see what happens". As innocence as those remarks and others are, he sets himself up for criticism because he doesn't aim well. Hope he does better in the debates.
