The network of more than 30 news and technology companies also includes CNN and Buzzfeed.

Facebook and Twitter have joined a network of over 30 news and technology companies to tackle fake news and improve the quality of information on social media, the group said on Tuesday.

First Draft Coalition, formed in June 2015 with the backing of Alphabet’s Google GOOG -1.21% , said it would create a voluntary code of practice, promote news literacy among social media users, and launch a platform where members can verify questionable news stories.

The platform will be launched by the end of October, Jenni Sargent, managing director of the coalition, said in an email.

They’re trying their hardest to strip the 1st Amendment from the people. They forget that the 2nd is in place to protect the 1st.

You are right, of course.

Our Forefathers were very prescient.

From a different article:

Our founding members, from different organisations and projects, are each dedicated to raising awareness and improving standards around the use of content sourced from the social web. They are Bellingcat, Eyewitness Media Hub, Emergent, Meedan, Reported.ly, Storyful and Verification Junkie.

I consider myself to be reasonably caught up on the Interwebs, and I have never heard of any of these sites. Care to bet that all of them are 100% liberal? And including Buzzfeed? Yikes.

I too have never hard of these obscure sites.

It's an open assault on conservative media, just in time for the November election.

Handing over the power to control what information people are exposed to to some small group is a recipe rather than the cure for fake information...its proper remedy is to get better information out there to expose the fakes.

Facebook FB -1.15% , the world’s largest social media network with about 1.7 billion users each month, has been criticized for its role in spreading fake stories and misinformation.

Fake information goes viral on Facebook because those that realize its a hoax can't do anything but add a comment on the copy of the post that they saw. While many more people just hit "share" without checking its veracity because the meme validates something they feel strongly about....and the report that its a hoax does not go forward with the meme.

On Reddit, fake stories get identified and down-voted by the users.

Those large organizations can’t censor the internet. They can agree on a consistent telling of the news, that’s all. Am I correct here?

Anyway, I’d rather have an internet that’s half fake and half real than one that’s all fake.

Even those reporters/presenters that try to get it right don’t always get it right. In many cases there is no agreed-upon “right”. You need multiple perspectives.

Keep in mind that the internet is suppose to be "turned over" to foreign entities at the end of September.

If that does indeed occur with this new social media "truth" conglomerate, it appears they will be able to censor the internet.

There is nothing wrong with your Twitter feed. Do not attempt to adjust the content. We are controlling transmission. If we wish to make it louder, we will bring up the volume. If we wish to make it softer, we will tune it to a whisper... sit quietly and we will control all that you see and hear. We repeat: there is nothing wrong with your Twitter feed...

“It’s a small price to pay for not having self-appointed guardians judging what’s “real news” and shutting down whatever doesn’t fit their definition.”

I agree. In addition, one of the things I really like about this site is that when one of us does get duped, usually within ten posts it’s refuted. That’s the way it should work, not Suckerberg and his minions deciding what the truth is for us.

We have an internet that can check things for ourselves.

We have an internet only until September 30, 2016 unless congress halts the give-away.
