THE GREAT AMERICAN SONGBOOK

IRVING BERLIN

PAUL WHITEMAN: ”HOW DEEP IS THE OCEAN?“

The failure of “Reaching for the Moon,” the United Artists musical that lost its music, dealt a crushing blow to Irving’s ability to write. The Crash of ‘29 had sent his finances into the toilet. After that, Irving Berlin became a stickler for knowing where every penny was and what it was earning. Enter Rudy Vallee: Irving’s old friend went out of his way to record his songs and put some royalties into his buddy’s bank account.

By 1932, Irving had drawn his second wind. This was the song that put him back in the black. It was one of his few hit songs that was introduced on the radio, rather than stage or film.

Paul Whiteman was one of the more fascinating figures of the early Jazz Era. He was known as the bandleader “who made a lady out of jazz,” thus making it acceptable for white audiences. He would employ singers like Bing Crosby and musicians such as Bix Beiderbecke and Jack Teagarden. He would premier Gershwin’s “Rhapsody in Blue” and the light classical suites of his primary arranger, Ferde Grofe. Over time he became known as the “King of Jazz.” He would start a trend that would be continued by Berry Gordy at Motown in Detroit.

In 1966, when Paul was 76 and just a year away from his death from congestive heart failure, he was living north of Philadelphia in Bucks County. One day he accepted the position of judge at a rock and roll Battle of the Bands, and he found himself paired with another famous resident of the county, James Michener, author of a large number of historical novels.

”I’m not sure what the hell I’m doing here,” Michener admitted to Paul. “I’m still listening to Benny Goodman and Glenn Miller.”

To Michener’s surprise, Paul Whiteman gave him a fifteen minute crash course in rock and roll, and what to listen for.

”You like this stuff?” asked Michener in consternation.

”I love it,” replied Paul. “If I were 16 years old today, I’d start my own rock and roll band.”

Like Irving Berlin, Paul Whiteman had seen vast changes in popular music over his lifetime, and nothing surprised him anymore.

This was the recording that put this song on the map.

Paul Whiteman: ”How Deep is the Ocean?”

Good evening, Mac...*HUGS*...did you have a good oxygen week? Good forward progress?

Ready for some dirt time this weekend?

We are supposed to have a sunny Saturday, and then a week with some rain every day.

Dudess! NASCAR Xfinity race and college football on TV! Decisions, decisions! What to do? What to do? ;-)

Which one do I watch or do I surf between the two channels and miss all of the action on both?

Usually when I surf and change the channel then for sure something exciting just happened and I missed it! LOL

THE GREAT AMERICAN SONGBOOK

IRVING BERLIN

BING CROSBY: ”HOW DEEP IS THE OCEAN?“

This is very early Bing from the Thirties, featuring the original intro that Irving wrote for the song. Bing’s style has not yet evolved into the quintessential crooner.

Thanks, Connie, for the tributes to our troops. *hugs*

Are things cooling off yet for the fall? Have you been able to fry an egg on the sidewalk?

Our nights are starting to drop into the mid 40s, but still some rain most every day.
