Facebook Just Got a Whole Lot Creepier
Facebook Just Got a Whole Lot Creepier ^ | 30 August 2016 | Michael Krieger

I’ve been creeped out by Facebook for a long time now. The following story takes it to another level.

From Fusion:

While some of these incredibly accurate friend suggestions are amusing, others are alarming, such as this story from Lisa*, a psychiatrist who is an infrequent Facebook user, mostly signing in to RSVP for events. Last summer, she noticed that the social network had started recommending her patients as friends—and she had no idea why.

“I haven’t shared my email or phone contacts with Facebook,” she told me over the phone.

The next week, things got weirder.

Most of her patients are senior citizens or people with serious health or developmental issues, but she has one outlier: a 30-something snowboarder. Usually, Facebook would recommend he friend people his own age, who snowboard and jump out of planes. But Lisa told me that he had started seeing older and infirm people, such as a 70-year-old gentleman with a walker and someone with cerebral palsy.

“He laughed and said, ‘I don’t know any of these people who showed up on my list— I’m guessing they see you,’” recounted Lisa. “He showed me the list of friend recommendations, and I recognized some of my patients.”

I have literally gotten rid of all of them.

Linkdin = gone
Facebook = gone
Instagram = never on
Sanpchat = never on

I see no value in any of it.

I joined because of two local groups that can only be accessed through Facebook. I agree with this article; people who are identified as potential friends are sometimes pretty nosey choices, based on one or two common "friends".

What I do like it for is there's one local TV news outlet that puts up some interesting articles for discussion. But along with that comes connections to strangers through the discussions.

Summary...I don't "friend" anyone I don't know, and I also know their friends are benign. And then I don't bother with any of the infantile nonsense that folks I used to think are intelligent post.

“...I have literally gotten rid of all of them...”

With the exception of FreeRepublic which is the class of the internet. And it is plenty “social”.

You fools that have “smartphones” are the biggest fools of all...I would bet 1000 American dollars none of you read the agreement to having such a device and what the provider can do with that mini-computer and all actions utilized by the “end user?”...as far as facebook I made an account only to comment on idiotic articles that only accept facebook ....Gee who really is Joseph Mythen?...It sure as hell ain’t me...I know a few social security numbers and peoples histories ....i have to laugh at all the MOWRONS who communicate constantly over the information gathering site....how many stories do you read where “Facebook” account says this person posted this? Barnum has always been right...”there is a sucker born every minute”.....keep handing over your everyday interactions with all IP addresses in plain view as Fucker-berg signs in to talk to obambi....useful idiots are what facebook users are...most are a day late and dollar short when it comes to news.

Yes FR is social, but it doesn’t nag, post pictures of Nacho’s or a Pomegranate Cosmopolitan in a martini glass, and send me an email telling me that you posted such.

I have frequently had a business associate with whom I (at best) have a passing acquaintance recommended to me. We have no FB friends in common, live 10 states away from each other, are not connected via Linkedin or some other social website. In fact, I have only met the man on two occasions in person, and shared maybe 10 phone calls over 13 years.

How could they possibly make that recommendation?

You ain’t kidding. Several years ago, I got literally
trapped in the Facebook trap. In 2008, I went on FB to
leave a note for Sarah Palin, along with probably thousands
of other people. I’d had to “log in” to even get to go on
there. At that time, I could find NO escape. - Then the FB
nagging started; the pressure to get lots of “friends” and
write my “status” report every day. - Well, I fell down that
rabbit hole and struggled with that crap every day for
several months.

My cousin, a radio personality had literally THOUSANDS of
“friends” (only he’s not a big socializer).

Well, a friend’s DIL joined up and posted all her big
redecorating projects complete with photos AND then posted
their schedule, when they planned on being on a trip & when
they were returning.

One weekend, they returned home and they had been cleaned
out! - I finally did ESCAPE when enough people finally got
enough and demanded a way out of Facebook.

I’ve been out of there for several years now and no desire
to ever stick me big toe in the water over there again.

If you put your address on FB they tie that to your lat/long position. Where you spend your days is probably assumed as your place of work, your nights as your home.

I only signed up on FB a few weeks ago. I am not impressed. It is boring, I go there once a day hoping to find something that is interesting. I don't find it!

FreeRepublic rules!

Yay, did it.

Free at last!

Thanks for your help.

By the way, when they asked "why?" I clicked "other" and then explained that Facebook (corporate) has political biases and policies which I find intolerable.

Verrry interesting. Just a couple of weeks ago, I got a Facebook “friend” request from my doctor. It included his Facebook home page with a picture of his family, none of whom I have ever met. He lives 65 miles away from me. My only contact with him, ever, has been in his office, as a patient. It seemed quite odd.

As a fellow male, I concede that selling shares in Facebook was just common sense. No criticism there; I don’t expect he has the same view of marriage as I do anyway.

Good! Glad it worked for you. Pass this on to friends and relatives deciding to get out and off FB.

One of the many benefits we get from FR can be answers to how do we get out of certain situations.

Facebook is evil and not for most of us.

Yeah. I hate fb myself and cancelled my account after Obama got reelected. People made me sick. But my wife gets lots of business using it. It is an amazing tool for entrepreneurs.

Wanna bet?

She may not have shared them overtly, but they've been shared.

I think it was last week when a FReeper posted something disturbing — if it’s true. He said he believes that when you’re on Facebook, and if your computer has a mic, they can listen to you.

I think it was something like this: He had Facebook up on his PC. He and his brother were together in the room and were discussing metal buildings. Neither had ever surfed the net for metal buildings. Within a few minutes when he was back to the internet, ads for metal buildings began popping up.

If it happened, doubtful that anyone actively listened, but maybe there are programs out there that can data mine words being spoken.

Anyhow, FWIW...
