There is no more unhealthy being, no man less worthy of respect, than he who either really holds, or feigns to hold, an attitude of sneering disbelief toward all that is great and lofty, whether in achievement or in that noble effort which, even if it fails, comes to second achievement. A cynical habit of thought and speech, a readiness to criticise work which the critic himself never tries to perform, an intellectual aloofness which will not accept contact with life's realities - all these are marks, not as the possessor would fain to think, of superiority but of weakness. They mark the men unfit to bear their part painfully in the stern strife of living, who seek, in the affection of contempt for the achievements of others, to hide from others and from themselves in their own weakness. The rôle is easy; there is none easier, save only the rôle of the man who sneers alike at both criticism and performance.

That is my favorite TR quote. I use it often when counseling others who have tried and failed at something.

You tried and it didn’t work. So what. You tried which puts you miles ahead of everyone else, who’s opinions don’t matter anyway.

I tacked up this quote on the wall of the conference room where critiques and cause mapping for various mistakes, accidents, and such like, take place.

I was surprised at how long it lasted before management “disappeared” it.

That is a good quote.

The one speech that I have found a lot of good quotes is President Nixon’s farewell speech to the White House staff.

the poem, or ode known as Desiderata which was penned in the 1920’s has also held an inspiring note for me. Also the poem by Kipling titled IF is along that note as well.

Yes. I went to the Nixon Presidential Museum when it was just a house and gardens. Oh, the docents were fabulous! The stories about his mom making her angel food cake very early in the morning when the stars were twinkling brought tears to your eyes.

The TR quote is great, this dovetails nicely with it.
