Louisiana Gov. John Bel Edwards (D) said Sunday that Donald Trump has helped draw attention to recovery efforts after the recent devastating floods in his state.
In an interview on CNN's "State of the Union," the governor downplayed critical remarks he made before the Republican presidential nominee visited his state.
"I didn't dismiss his trip as a photo-op. Before he came down, I said we welcome him here, we want him to be helpful," Edwards said. "And we hope that it doesn't turn into a mere photo-op."
Edwards said Trump's visit to the state was positive for Louisiana.
"Because it helped to shine a spotlight on Louisiana and on the dire situation that we have here, that it was helpful," he said.
"I also appreciated the good phone call, the conversation that I had with Gov. [Mike] Pence [R-Ind.], who was sincere and genuine when he called, and we spoke for a long time on Friday morning about their desire to be helpful," he said about Trump's running mate.

I want to give a very personal account of what happened yesterday here in Baton Rouge....my family is very involved in relief efforts here and know personally 50 families that have total loss to their homes and vehicles....truly overwhelming circumstances for these folks....one woman working at a flood relief facility that we are involved with, finally got fed up with no help from media, Obama, etc and stated Im calling Mr Trump.....he does not know or understand what is going on here in Louisiana...she then called Donald Trumps office in New York and began talking with someone on the phone, started crying and pleading for help and the lady at Mr Trumps organization started crying with her and assured her that when she got off the phone, she would go to Donald, Jr or Eric to let them know the seriousness of whats going on. Within a couple of hours, everyone started hearing that Mr Trump was coming to Louisiana......now, we dont know if our friends phone call prompted the visit, but she is telling everyone about how caring and concerned the Trump organization was and sensitive to her call......just wanted to share..
Well, I'm in agreement with you. Unless they actually switch parties, make a public refutation of their prior beliefs, AND publicly endorse the Republican/Conservative candidates, it's all talk so that they can appear "balanced" or to defuse a situation that their mouth-flappin' created.
"Ding-A-Ling" ain't going to make a second term as governor.
...Yeah but Obama made sure no one will be racist during recovery efforts....
Don’t give any credit to Governor “Honor Code” Edwards. He didn’t want Trump coming down (because he knew it would look bad for his party) and said as much, he gave excuses as to why Obama wouldn’t come down (even though Obama was in New Jersey getting hugs from Christy almost before the winds of Sandy had died down) and the only reason he’s backtracking now is he’s beginning to feel the wrath of the people of this great state who are now solidly behind Trump. He’s a politician and a democrat, no more needs to be said about that idiot.
If you look at the picture on Drudge, he already is.
Is this the real reason Hussein is fearful of this state? He knows The Hand of God is gonna strike him down.
Is the governor trying to get on the future POTUS’s good side?
“I agree. There were no politics in Governor Edwards comments.”
Gov. Edwards and ex-Senator Landrieu thanked Trump for the visit and the way he shined the light on the horrible flooding in south Louisiana. Be it for political reasons or genuine gratitude toward Trump (don’t know which is the case nor do I care), Edwards and Landrieu said the right things in the CNN interview with Dana Bash.
Now, Gov. Edwards didn’t want Trump in Louisiana if it would just be a photo-op. When it was reported how Trump donated money to one of the local churches, donated an 18-wheeler full of supplies to the flood victims, and met with volunteers and victims, I think Edwards had no choice but to compliment Trump. Dana Bash was even taken aback by John Bel Edwards giving kudos to Trump and backing up Landrieu’s comments on Trump’s visit.
There was a bit of politics in Edwards’ original comments before the Trump visit.
The Trump visit also made Obama and Clinton look bad by comparison. Obama will visit on Tuesday, but the trip will already be a waste of time.
Re: Drudge pic
‘I said ‘fore’, ma’am, now get outta my way. I’m playing through!’
I wonder how much donations picked up after Trump’s visit?
With the election for governor we had a choice between Edwards and a flawed David Vitter. I held my nose and voted for Vitter. As this flood unfolded it was clear that Governor Edwards was the man for the job. As he took to the local airways he gave the people of Louisiana reassurance that they were doing everything possible to keep people out of harm’s way. He is puts the people before politics. This ex marine is a good man. I’d vote for him next election.
I would like to see air Force Oneewelcom ed with a flood of Trump Signs.
Trump draws attention to the plight of Louisiana with a visit and a semi full of food, water, supplies, etc.
....................................................an
and he also brought HOPE and the proof that there are still people in America who occupy the High Ground. Trump is a LEADER!
Huma would likely dispute that.
Does not want to be a one term governor?
