Ryan Lochte Apologizes Over Rio Robbery Scandal: "I Should Have Been More Responsible"

Ryan Lochte is saying sorry.

After continually, publicly claiming to have been a victim of an armed robbery during a night out with his fellow U.S. Olympic swimming teammates, the gold medalist has issued a lengthy statement regarding the unfolding scandal.

"I want to apologize for my behavior last weekend—for not being more careful and candid in how I described the events of that early morning and for my role in taking the focus away from the many athletes fulfilling their dreams of participating in the Olympics," he said in a statement issued on social media Friday morning.

As for why he hadn't spoken publicly sooner, "I waited to share these thoughts until it was confirmed that the legal situation was addressed and it was clear that my teammates would be arriving home safely," he penned.

"It's traumatic to be out late with your friends in a foreign country—with a language barrier—and have a stranger point a gun at you and demand money to let you leave, but regardless of the behavior of anyone else that night, I should have been much more responsible in how I handled myself and for that am sorry to my teammates, my fans, my fellow competitors, my sponsors and the hosts of this great event," he continued. "I am very proud to represent my country in Olympic competition and this was a situation that could and should have been avoided. I accept responsibility for my role in this happening and have learned from valuable lessons."

The apology comes on the heels of Brazilian police officials telling reporters that two of the four swimmers involved in the alleged robbery have confessed to the incident being fake.

Covering up their misbehavior in the bathroom, maybe hanging with girls (if they have girlfriends). Still no excuse for the whopper they told.

“The fourth swimmer, Jimmy Feigen, made a deal with a judge to make a $10,800 payment and be allowed to leave the country later Friday, his lawyer said.”

Quite a fine for a rather minor involvement in a minor incident.

Is Brazil sticking it to the Americans?

Cash in? No. I’ll remember that gay hair dye job the rest of my life. I’ll pass that on to my youngers.

Yet I guess he’s ‘thankful’ that his gay buddy made it out okay.

I still believe, and all evidence points this way, that the Brazilians are lying, and covering up a robbery, by a government employee. He apologizes to not ruin his career, and to end the persecution by the anti-(white) American mobs.

So what was he covering up with his lies...?

Nothing, really.

He was simply a boy who lied to his mother about what happened to his watch. It was his mother who went public with the story, which then spun out of control.

Lesson to all:

Don't lie to your mother! Not because it's bad, but because they can't stop themselves from meddling in your affairs, and if you tell them a lie they will meddle anyway and just make it worse.

As the commercial goes, it's what they do.

This isn’t over yet. Lochte is being charged and subject to arrest or fine in Brazil. I presume his attorneys are trying to work this out. Brazil won’t try to extradite him, but they could file a red notice with Interpol which would subject him to arrest if he leaves the US. Also, the USOC is going to decide later if there should be discipline. Lochte has really screwed up and it will probably cost him millions in lost revenue.

You're right, a Brazilian woman witnessed the robbery, gun and all. Lotche will be getting an apology from the Brazilian government when this is over.

Not likely, two of his associates have said the robbery didn’t happen and the third has reached an agreement to pay about $11,000 to get his passport back and have a Brazilian court rule that he can leave the country. With that much of a formal record, Lockte won’t be getting an apology from Brazil and will likely agree to a monetary settlement to get charges dismissed.

Even if a small fraction of a degree, perhaps this young man will be helpful in turning America around setting the right course for sailing. Though it did take some time to hear his words, these, at least were spoken giving hope that something good might be found in this incident.

Lochte’s apology is a non-apology.

Is there something in the Olympic rules about stripping medals from those athletes who engage in behavior unbecoming?

I don’t in any way mean to excuse his behavior in damaging property at the store, its just that my expectation would be that the amount of damages would be settled in court, not at the scene.
