Well-meaning laws designed to nab high-level criminals have been twisted to siphon off money from law-abiding American citizens. The latest abuse of civil asset forfeiture laws involves air and rail travelers being targeted and fleeced by a federal agency. The Drug Enforcement Administration is pulling Americans travel data en masse from airline and Amtrak records, profiling individuals with suspicious travel habits, and targeting them for searches as part of the nations drug interdiction efforts.
Hey, kids, we’re all targets of government. Someday, we’ll get tired of that and do something about it.
This has been going on for decades due to the War On (Some) Drugs many here enthusiastically support.
Tell me, just what do you think a “Drug War” looks like?
He can't say anything ... just talk about the wall and radical islam, etc.
But it wouldn't surprise me (given his common sense thought pattern(s) about government interference) that he wouldn't go in there and EO the SHIT out of a lot of bad regs.
I’m hoping so. I wonder what it takes to eliminate an agency.
Its becoming more and more like Nazi Germany here. And the sheep just follow the Gestapo and the SS troops without question
I don't know all the ins and outs of EO's ... but the right ones can do magic.
That’s no assurance of safety either, since cops can take your stuff and you can’t even appeal it..................
Just say “No” to a search.
Unless they have a search warrant, they can’t do anything.
And they can’t get a search warrant based only on your “travel habits.”
If they do have a search warrant, you can’t do anything.
Technically, Congress.
But the President can emphasize or deemphasize the powers of any agency as he sees fit. Obama's hamstringing of the Border Patrol is a perfect example.
Everything Obama and his daughters use should be legal or they should be arrested.
This looks like a failed "Drug War" where the bureaucrats are looking for the safe busts to pad a dismal record of stopping the big boys.
Yep!
.. but at this stage of life, I just usually don't go.
I always wonder what the cops would do if they confiscated another innocent person’s stuff, and then one time, an angry flash mob of hundreds of heavily armed people descends upon the police station to seize the items back and give them back to their rightful owner?
I don’t get it. Where are these searches performed? At the airport? If so, how does civil forfeiture come into it? They keep my luggage? I always thought that typically these loathsome forfeiture rules come into play if you posses stuff within x feet of your home or car. And if they use a database to determine that my perfectly legal travel is “suspicious” (i.e. to profile me) how the heck do they get a judge to buy into the fact that I fly a lot as probable cause of a crime in order to get a warrant to search my HOME? Makes no sense to me.
Grabbing money from a Cartel courier puts the agent at risk of being hunted down and killed. Grabbing money from a law-abiding American citizen HAS NO RISK. So, what do you expect the DEA agents will want to do?
A drug war one hopes to win focuses on the corrupt politicians and law enforcement that perpetuates it. A sham war that creates a growth industry in corruption and incarceration will never be won and was never intended to be won.
