Republican Mayor Richard Berry was driving around Albuquerque last year when he saw a man on a street corner holding a sign that read: “Want a Job. Anything Helps.”
Throughout his administration, as part of a push to connect the homeless population to services, Berry had taken to driving through the city to talk to panhandlers about their lives. His city’s poorest residents told him they didn’t want to be on the streets begging for money, but they didn’t know where else to go.
Seeing that sign gave Berry an idea. Instead of asking them, many of whom feel dispirited, to go out looking for work, the city could bring the work to them.
Next month will be the first anniversary of Albuquerque’s There’s a Better Way program, which hires panhandlers for day jobs beautifying the city. In partnership with a local nonprofit that serves the homeless population, a van is dispatched around the city to pick up panhandlers who are interested in working. The job pays $9 an hour, which is above minimum wage, and provides a lunch. At the end of the shift, the participants are offered overnight shelter as needed.

This Republican mayor has an incredibly simple idea to help the homeless. And it seems to be working.
Does he give them a W-2 or a 1099? How many Worker’s Comp claims have they filed? Sexual harassment lawsuits? EEO complaints?
I’d bet that greedy lawyers are lining up to “help” these poor, exploited workers. Because that’s how modern America works.

We’re nearing the conclusion of 8 years of the Obama Presidency. All the seas have been lowered, there’s no crime, everybody has jobs from the stimulus package, and Michelle has us eating right. So why is there homelessness?
City employees in major urban cesspools would oppose this since it reduces the need for high paid union shovel leaners.

FDR put the unemployed to work on infrastructure projects. After 8 years of government funded “shovel” work we had libraries, post offices, roads, Hoover Dam, national park infrastructure, court houses, and many of the state parks we enjoy today. In addition the jobless doing labor for the CCC and other agencies had new skills as well as an work ethic and strong desire to find higher paying work in the private sector.
After 8 years of stimulus transfer payments for no work or contribution by the recipients, we have nothing to show for the trillions spent. Had the federal government required real work in return for transfer payments, instead of giving handouts to buy votes, we would today have new highways, world class national parks, clean city streets, safe bridges, and the infrastructure to support expanding commerce for the next 50 years. Such a waste.

You can have your tens of thousands of NY City homeless clean-up the urine, feces, needles, vomit, litter and blood off of the streets of the Big Apple.
Win-win, right?
At some point in time, the Mayor will regret doing this as some Liberal will figure out how to screw this up.
The homeless will need benefits, uniforms, union cards and pay, etc etc.

Too many "public employees" don't even actually earn minimum wage, never mind 2 or 3 times the amount.
I have always called that "the other welfare" for the entitled indolent...
If you visit city or county offices often, it quickly becomes obvious that 20% of the "public servants" do 80% of the work.
There ARE outstanding public employees.
Just not enough of them.
