More rain Saturday was expected to swamp already soggy ground across Louisiana and other parts of the Gulf Coast, as Louisiana's governor announced that crews had rescued more than 1,000 people, some of whom were clinging to trees to stay safe.
Officials said at least two people had died in the floods. Gov. John Bel Edwards declared a state of emergency as rescue workers in the southeastern part of the state braced for more rain. The state's emergency management office called it a "historic flood event."
In a 24-hour period, Baton Rouge reported as much as 11.34 inches of rain. One weather observer reported to the National Weather Service that 17.09 inches fell in Livingston.

First in to say, ‘George Bush Hates Black People!!’
What do I win? ;)
Prayers up. People do NOT need to go through this. However, when you build on swampland, you’ve kinda got to expect this from time to time.
(And that’s nobody’s fault except for the people who thought this was A Good Idea in the first place...and yes, I have friends in LA, and yes, I’ve lived there/done Army Training in said swamps. Blah, blah, blah.)
Yikes—do they live in Baton Rouge?
Lousianna and Democrats can’t handle a little storm
A slice of cheese.
Wouldn't have happened if Bobby Jindal were governor.
Louisiana - Half under water, the other half under indictment
Heh!
That's AMAZING.
Baton Rouge is unlikely to flood, except in a few spots (like Interstate underpasses).
Once upon a time, a guy named Woody Dumas ran for mayor ( Baton Rouge at the time "did" have a major flooding problem). Ole Woody said "if you elect me, Baton Rouge will never flood again". He then proceeded to lace the city with huge drainage channels (I won't call'em "ditches", because a "ditch" implies "small", and these weren't).
I lived there for thirty years, and BR never had major flooding since ole Woody "did his thing". Local overloads in a few low spots, but never city-wide as used to happen.
I wonder how his system stood up to this assault.
"They thought I was crazy to build a castle in a swamp but I built it anyway. It sank into the swamp so I built another one. That one sank into the swamp too, so I built another. That one fell over so I built another and this one stayed!"
Tiger Bend Road, IIRC, is by LSU, in an area of huge apartment complexes for students.
Third time’s the charm? ;)
He should have been mayor of New Orleans. A relatively small investment likely would have saved much of the city.
Denham Springs is an island. The number of people that had to leave and quick is unimaginable even to us that have endured many floods. They/We held up or heads, helped our neighbors and got out in the most organized way and being calm all the while knowing that we lost everything. Love your neighbor as I have loved you.
Businesses were not looted. No roaming gangs were in sight. You won’t see any of them screaming about the Government ought to do this, that and then more as was seen around the world by the residents of New Orleans during Katrina.
That would be interesting to know.
Kudos to you, and I’m sorry for your loss. I can’t imagine losing everything I own.
