Russia will cover an entire city behind a smoke screen this week as part of a military exercise.
The city of Severomorsk home to about 50,000 people along Russias northern arctic coast is the venue for the unprecedented experiment. The idea is to create a blanket of smoke that makes the city and the naval base disappear from radars.

Are they vaguely suggesting something violent? Nah. Just a smoke screen. Certainly there would be nothing harmful in the "cloaking" matter they'll use. Right?

Interesting, but there are different mechanisms out there than can penetrate fog. They are likely testing what they have developed.

Are smoke screens all that effective these days? I thought they were more of a mid-20th century defensive solution.

I seem to recall some industrial center that tried that in World War II. Pictures in Life Magazine, perhaps?

I suggest they put up some giant mirrors to project the image of the city to a different location.
Either that or cover it in mylar a la David Copperfield so it can't be seen at night.
To: rktman
Are they going to bring in David Copperfield?

Are you, like DJT, suggesting, even if vaguely, some sort of violence? LOL!
P.S. I was secretly thinking the same thing.

Seemed to work against Superman in the latest movie.

We test obscurants on a regular basis. They have varying degrees of effectiveness and degrees of hazards. Some of the generators are pretty cool, but they expend consumables at an amazing rate, and all are still subject to wind and weather.

Without the magic of tv, David Copperfield is nothing. We went to a show of his and will never waste time or $$$$ on the fraud again. Obvious wires. Drapes already shaped into whatever was supposed to disappear. Everyone could see the car drive off the stage and the playing cards shown on tv screens. Pitiful.
