The suspect arrested in connection to the shooting of two San Diego police officers and a potential suspect were identified Friday.
Jesse Michael Gomez, 52, was taken into custody after two police officers were shot, San Diego Police Department (SDPD) Chief Shelley Zimmerman told reporters at a press conference Friday.
Officer Jonathan "JD" DeGuzman, 43, a 16-year veteran of the force was shot and killed Thursday night. Officer Wade Irwin, 32, a 9-year veteran is still recovering in the hospital. Both officers are part of the force's Elite Gang Unit.
Zimmerman says she visited Officer Irwin and his family in the hospital on Friday. He is now awake and expected to make a full recovery.
Police took Gomez into custody shortly after the shooting. He was found in a ravine in the 1300 block of 38th Street, according to Zimmerman. He had suffered a gunshot wound and was in critical condition as of 11 a.m. Friday.
Zimmerman also named Marcus Antonio Cassani as the second potential suspect in connection to the shooting. He was arrested on the 4000 block of Epsilon Street Friday morning for an outstanding warrant.
According to Zimmerman, it is unknown if Cassani was involved in the shooting.
Zimmerman identified the slain officer as Jonathan DeGuzman, 43, a 16-year veteran of the force, and the surviving officer as Wade Irwin, 32, a 9-year veteran. DeGuzman was married and had two young children, Zimmerman said.
You’d think a thug that old would know by now not to shoot cops. Generally a career ending move.
San Diego police officer killed on duty; attack may have been deliberate
They’re not telling what weapon or where the officers were hit. Very interesting, to say the least. Probably a long gun and rounds went through the vest.
was he an illegal alien?
“One of the two officers died at the hospital, according to NBC News, after sustaining multiple gun shot wounds to his upper torso.
The slain officers partner, who was also shot in the upper torso, had emergency surgery and is expected to make a full recovery.
The radio call said “definitely a handgun”.
“The two uniformed, gang-suppression officers were in their marked patrol car just before 11 p.m. Thursday when they stopped a person on Acacia Grove Way near 37th Street in Southcrest for reasons that remained unclear Friday afternoon, Zimmerman said in a news conference. The officers called for emergency cover. When nearby officers arrived to help, they found DeGuzman and Irwin shot in the chest and rushed DeGuzman to a hospital in a patrol car.
The chief said both officers were wearing bulletproof vests. At least one of the officers body-worn cameras captured the incident, which she said unfolded extremely quickly.
Police said they had been shot several times. Investigators did not know if they had been ambushed.”

When the president lauds a rapper and his album featuring a dead judge at the WH, people get the idea he is soft on crime.
When thugs visiting the WH have their ankle bracelets go off and nobody really cares...well I could go on but you get the picture.
Could be the real killer is in TJ now and this is just a guy the gang told to take the fall.

Tribune Publishing wraps its arms around San Diego and all of Southern California
The purchase of U-T San Diego by Tribune Publishing owners of the Los Angeles Times up the road is a sign of the kind of newspaper consolidation publishers are being pushed toward.

” Finally, theres the political angle. Papa Doug Manchester and his associate John Lynch define themselves by their conservatism, an important strand of San Diego culture.
Beutners L.A. Times, though, is proving itself out to be a liberal force in L.A., and he would presumably bring that perspective to San Diego. The days of by-the-old-book, down-the-middle objective journalism are clearly numbered overall, with Southern California now a prime case history in the reinvention of the local news business.”
Thanks. It just never ends.
