Its been almost two decades since the DVD arrived, sparking the long, slow decline of video cassette tapes. But the tape era is about to come to a final close.
The last maker of VHS-compatible video cassette recorders, Japanese manufacturer Funai Electric, says its going to stop producing the devices at the end of the month due to declining sales. Sony said it would cease production of video tapes in its Betamax format last year, 13 years after it stopped making compatible recorders.

Which will eventually be replaced with some sort of implanted RFID receiver.
I have to re-check my prepper supplies, but I think I still have plenty of spares.
I think the long-term direction is to have everything in a cloud. Wi-fi will continue to improve and costs will lower, which will make the need to store large files (such as movies) locally unnecessary.
I am gonna miss that flashing “12:00”.

I hooked it up and the my web account produced a graphic showing the stuff receiving and transmitting. There were 10 devices!

I agree. People with 4K TV’s pretty much have to stream 4K content.

Funai made the Magnavox DVD player/recorder and I use it quite often. It states this recorded DVD will play on Most DVD players and all Magnavox players.
Went to buy a new DVD player, and all they had was Funai, so I bought one. The remote will operate both the Funai and Magnavox players. The cases for both recorders are the same.
The Funai will NOT play the DVDs recorded from a Funai Magnavox recorder. Go figure!
However,the Buggy Whip Line will continue.
DVDs degrade as well—life is about 25 years.
On the other hand, new turntable manufacturers appear every day. There are hundreds of them worldwide.
I still got mine, and I still watch my Rocky VHS collection on it! And it is also the most accurate clock I got in my place!
I dunno, there’s just something quaint about the old porno VCR tapes.
