Police: Man shot by Chicago cop answering call of someone threatening suicide

Megan Crepeau Contact Reporter Chicago Tribune

A Chicago police officer shot a man in the leg in Calumet Heights on the South Side early Sunday after getting a call from someone threatening suicide, authorities said.

Just before 1:10 a.m., a person called 911 saying he was in a second-floor apartment in the 1800 block of East 87th Street and was going to kill himself, a source said. The caller said he had a 9mm handgun, according to the source.

About 1:15 a.m., police arrived to assist with the EMS call, according to Chief of Detectives Eugene Roy. Officers found a man in the apartment "holding what appeared to be a handgun" and they told him to drop it, Roy said.

The man pointed the gun at the officers, and one of them deployed a Taser while another officer fired his gun, Roy said. The Taser connected with the man and he was also shot in the leg, Roy said.

The man was taken to a hospital and his injuries were not considered life-threatening, Roy said.

So in light of BLM and MSM the question becomes regarding police shootings:

Will police no longer be trained in the use of their firearms to hit 'Center Mass', -- (considering that the officer shot the armed offender in the leg), but instead be taught how to trick shoot, like is done in Hollywierd police and Cowboy shooter depictions?

Once again, someone wanting aTtEnTiOn! Well, good for him. He made the headlines and wasted valuable police time. Hope his leg hurts.

Actually, as the BLM terrorism expands, the police will no longer respond to such calls and will only appear in large groups with body armor and crowd suppression equipment.

Only a Flesh Wound

On television, as well as in movies, there seems to be this general idea that if someone is shot in the shoulder, or in the leg, then the worst that happens will be that the person will grimace and go on with what he was doing before he was shot. Getting shot in the leg may cause him to hobble around a bit, but no worse than a knee sprain. A “good guy” will sometimes shoot someone in the leg or shoulder, “just to stop him,” and in television and movies, this is almost always nonlethal.

However, a bullet wound to the left shoulder will usually prove to be lethal while a character will survive the same wound to the right shoulder or even the right chest, presumably because the heart (allegedly) is on the left side.

In reality, there’s no “safe” place to shoot a person, not even in a seemingly non-vital extremity like a leg or arm. There are huge blood vessels in a human being’s shoulder as well as lots of very delicate nerves and a very complex ball-and-socket joint that no surgeon on Earth can put back together once it’s smashed by a bullet. The legs also contain large blood vessels; a shot that nicks the femoral artery will cause a fatal loss of blood in only a few minutes. And this is all assuming a “clean” through-and-through wound, disregarding the possibility of the bullet glancing off a bone or joint and deflecting or fragmenting into pieces, of which each can then hit something else more important inside. In short, there’s no way for anyone, good or bad, to shoot someone and know that they will survive the wound. As they say, if you’re shooting at all, you’re shooting to kill.

But this trope is so widespread that it’s caused people to assume that it’s an accurate reflection of reality. In truth, since there isn’t any safe place to shoot at, police and soldiers usually aim for the center of mass (i.e. the torso) simply to increase the odds of hitting the person in the first place. Trying to intentionally wing a target increases the odds that you’ll miss entirely or end up hitting someone else. When dealing with dangerous criminals and where innocent lives are on the line, presumably, hitting the target, and only the target, should be top priority.

Shoot to Kill or to Wound? Here’s the Answer

Police officers are not trained to shoot to kill, nor do they shoot to wound. That, my friends, is the answer to the question.

Confused? I thought you might be so let’s dive right in and clarify those seemingly, but not, conflicting answers to “the question.” While we’re at it, we’ll also address the questions and statements we all see time and time again during the aftermath of police-involved shootings—“Why didn’t he shoot the gun from the bad guy’s hand?” Or, “Shoot ’em in the knee. That’ll drop the guy like a lead balloon.” And the ever popular, “I wish I’d have been there ’cause I’da shot the murderer in his gun hand. Then the crook couldn’t have shot anybody else and he’d still be alive to complete his dream of becoming a minister AND director of puppy petting at the local Ima Good Boy Charity and Feed the Homeless Sea Urchin Center.

Police officers are taught/trained to stop a threat to human life. U.S. police officers are not soldiers and criminals are not enemy combatants. Contrary to the belief of some people, U.S. streets are not battlefields where cops shoot first and ask questions later. It cannot and does not work that way.

In a perfect world there would be no crime and we’d all be safe, all the time. But our world is FAR from perfect; therefore, cops are tasked with arresting those who break the law. Unfortunately, some bad guys choose to not be arrested and will do whatever it takes to remain free, including trying to kill police officers. They may also choose to seriously harm or kill others during the commission of their crime(s). These two scenarios force officers to resort to deadly force to stop the threat to the lives of others, and to themselves.

Back to the earlier statements—police officers are not taught to kill anyone, nor are they taught to “wound” anyone. Officers do not aim for hands, feet, knees, firearms, knives, etc. Instead, during a deadly force confrontation—when lives are at stake—officers are taught to shoot center mass, meaning the center of their intended target. If all they see is the suspect’s head, then that is their target. If they see the entire body they then aim for its center (center mass).

Why aim for center mass? Common sense answer – because it is the largest available target, which makes it the easiest area to hit when under extreme duress during an incident that sometimes happens within a fraction of a second.

The cop may have aimed COM. Most cops aren’t good enough to just wing them. Regardless, this fellah wanted suicide by cop.

The headline is incorrect if you go by the witness the Tribune uses.

Events:

1. 9-1-1 call comes in threatening suicide.
2. Police respond with EMS
3. Police enter home and see a) a man pointing a gun - the police story or b) a man reaching into his pocket but has no gun - the girlfriends story.
4. Police shoot 18-y/o man in the leg.
5. Girlfriend says there was no suicide attempt and no weapon in the house. She and 18 y/o were having loud argument and nobody called 9-1-1.

Conclusions:

1. The police are lying.
2. The girlfriend is lying.
3. The Tribune misunderstood the entire event.
4. Somewhere else a man offed himself because police went to the wrong house.

In other words, the details here do not add up and, until they do, we don’t know what we have here.

IMO, the guy getting shot in the leg isn’t the most important part of the story. It’s that the whole event makes no sense if you believe what both the police and the girlfriend are saying. Either the cops got it wrong, the girlfriend got it wrong or the Trib got it wrong.

Something like this was mentioned back in 1968 in an article about movie and TV shows in which a person receives a “flesh wound” or is shot in the arm with a .45. It is always a non dangerous wound, never a shot to the groin or piercing an artery in the arm or leg.
And shooting the gun out of the bad guy’s hand never has the bullet fragment and the pieces tear his hand off or pierce his torso or face.

“The headline is incorrect if you go by the witness the Tribune uses.”

I never believe anything that the Leftist Chicago ‘Lib-une’ and, or the Chicago ‘Sun-Slimes’ fish wrap rags publish.

The last Conservative at the Lib-une is John Kass.

There are no Conservatives at the Slimes.

Chicago Cop Blog has a few comments about this so far:

Well the way I see it, the individual wanted sucide by cop, but the cops were not going to play along with it because they know if they killed a democrat voter they would of been in big trouble.

No Go Neighborhoods. Works well in Europe. Then set up Sharia Law Systems to govern those neighborhoods because of lack of police support.
