Except I don’t think this country’s elite has the character, nor understands our constitutional technology enough, to do it. I think it fails to appreciate what is going on outside its cloisters, among those weird, patriotic, religious, and – significantly – armed people living in uncool places between the coasts. I think it believes this anger is a passing fad, that it can bluff and bully its way through it the way it did to previous challenges to its rule.

Nixon’s opposition for the VP under Ike was Teddy McKeldin, a Trump by any measure. He nominated Ike at both conventions but was passed over by the party elite in favor of Nixon, a red baiter. By the time Nixon came back to beat Humphrey the country was fed up with Vietnam and wanted out of the War on Poverty. Flushing Nixon was no small task but was aided by his own paranoia. Not that he had no reason to be paranoid.
When Reagan defeated Carter we had our first taste of Trumpism since Teddy Roosevelt, both men were bigger than life and double the pleasure. Now we come full circle again and every day Americans know it and are more than ready to celebrate all that being an American means.
It is absolutely true that Trump’s defeat by whatever means will bring down the government. This truly is the last chance to save us from the chaos progressives have been planning for 50 years.
