Donald Trump, in a sharp shift in strategy, is now refusing to appear on many television outlets, and top advisers who want to limit his exposure are no longer notifying him of every interview request.
According to sources familiar with the campaign, one faction is worried that the constant rounds of interviews entail too much risk of the candidate making mistakes or fanning minor controversies, even though his mastery at driving the media agenda helped power his Republican primary victory.
A series of clashes over these and other tactical questions has caused Trump himself to openly question who is running his campaign, the sources say. And he has expressed anger when he believes his orders arent being followed.
On the media front, Trump is no longer appearing on CNN or MSNBC. He is staying off the Sunday talk shows. Nearly all his national television interviews since June 1 have been with Fox News.
This more restrictive approach, combined with recent incidents in which some aides have acted contrary to Trumps wishes, suggests a power shift as his children and especially his son-in-law, Jared Kushner, play an increasingly influential role.
Trump, who has resumed his full-throated denunciations of the mediasuch as calling CNN the Clinton News Networkpersonally vetted every TV invitation for most of the campaign. Now the staff is weeding out many requests without consulting him, the sources say, which could either be viewed as a mark of professionalization or an attempt to restrain Trump from being Trump.
Those in the caution camp want to avoid any repetition of Trumps March sitdown with MSNBCs Chris Matthews, when he stumbled in suggesting that women should be punished for abortions. They do not share the candidates boundless confidence in taking on all media adversaries.

Good post.
"Smarten up" is an idiom and I was using it as such.
"smarten up"
to get smarter; to become more alert and knowing. You had better smarten up if you want to survive around here. I knew he would smarten up sooner or later.
What I meant (and don't believe I have to explain) is that Trump got where he is by NOT being a politician. How he's more deeply involved in the political process and there are many people around him who do not have the best interests of Trump or the country in mind. These people are tools of the establishment and their aim is to bring Trump down.
Trump up until now has refused to play on their field. On their home turf. He's refused to abide by their rules. IF he decides that he needs to take the advice of these experts then he needs to smarten up...wise up...to their aims and goals.
Now maybe this is a moot point because maybe he has wised up or was wised up long ago and knows exactly what he's doing. I hope this is the case. But there have been plenty of people who have succumbed to these so called "experts".
IF you had bothered to read my posting history you would have seen that I am very pro-Trump and was so long before many others on the board. Not that this means anything but it would have given you a starting point for analyzing my comment before you responded to it.
Please ping me when you do it!
Have a good weekend.
Trump needs to be Trump and quit listening to his advisors. Fire the SOB’s.
“The counsels of war breed timidity” - MacArthur.
Many a good candidate has been ruined by his advisors advocating play it safe.

Yes. He didn’t get where he is by playing it conventionally, or listening to jaded drones. If he needs a mini-vacation he should take one, but he should NOT delegate the control of his campaign to stodgy has beens, never wases, or establishment moles.
“On the media front, Trump is no longer appearing on CNN or MSNBC. He is staying off the Sunday talk shows. Nearly all his national television interviews since June 1 have been with Fox News.”
I think this is a sound strategy. By staying with Fox, he is getting more viewers than CNN, MSNBC and pretty much every other media outlet combined. Why give the left soundbites to twist any way they want to twist it?
Trump likes to think out loud giving too many sound bites that can be used against him. Time to take measure on what you say before saying it. Being sure it is what and how you want to say it.
The presidency is within reach avoiding a major mistake is very important.
His latest recorded message was perfect example of what he needs to do . He just needs to repeat is over and over again and avoid the gotcha questions.
I think it is wise for Trump to pull back on his appearances before the Convention.
A reduction of exposure prior to the Convention builds anticipation.
If anyone understands how to control and manipulate the media narrative, it’s Trump.
Agree. He needs to focus his message and impact of the Convention.
Not spend time talking to “ heads” that will spin his answers or make up controversy like the star, that Disney also uses , but I’ve yet to see anyone other than Fox briefly point out... Even that was so quick that if you weren’t paying attention you have missed it.
Trump has been way to quite lately.
Since the Dallas Police Shootings, I am getting about 3x more positives from folks when they notice the Trump Tee-shirt I wear to run errands.
Which shirt do you have?

I read your explanation. It still seems pejorative to advise Trump to smarten up quick. If he were losing the primaries and you issued such advice, no one would question it. But at his age, having made billions and roundly vanquished 16 political pros, it seems a bit condescending.
Last I checked Trump was gaining, not losing, on Hillary in the polls. This, with Cruz, Ryan, Lee and many more Establishment types, plus the entire MSM, gunning for him without pause. Yet still he gains.
If Trump has taken a hiatus from certain networks, it wouldn’t be the first time. It also wouldn’t be the first time that strategy paid off in spades. Jmo.
If I hand out that absolutely priceless award, you will be included in the ping! Thanks again, and you have a great weekend too.
Enjoy and please ping when they get 1st or 1nd prize.
Here’s what I don’t get: if Fox owners are so anti Trump, how come a few of them, like Eric Bowling and Sean Hannity, are fair to Trump and don’t get fired? How come Fox Business is full of people like Lou Dobbs and Stuart Varney, who give Trump a fair shake? Does FBN have different owners?
And while I’m at it, how come creepy Shepard Smith dominates the news any time there’s a big news event? Don’t they realize nobody can stand the sight of him? He’s a real “lurch for the remote” channel changer, if you ask me.
Everybody says Fox owners give marching orders and the show hosts fall in line, but I get the opposite impression; it seems like they all have different slants, a few of them are consistently good, and many are consistently stupid and annoying, and year after year, nobody gets fired, even Shep Smith!
Can somebody explain it?
The basic mistake most people are making is thinking anybody watches television.
Well said. He didn’t get this far without simply being Trump! It didn’t matter what they threw at him in the debates, he threw it back with interest.
We know, and I’m sure Trump knows, the Mainstream Media are all against him. The MSM can’t ignore him completely, however they will slant what they report.
It’s absolutely vital that he gets his message across over the head of the MSM.
His speeches served the purpose during the primaries (and I watched several), but they were aimed partly at the audience present at the meeting. (Once you had sat through a few you knew fairly well what he’d say next time.)
One way IMHO would be a dedicated daily internet broadcast/statement/newscast, say 15-30 minutes each day and every day, not duplicating but building on what had gone before, including containing something relevant to the moment where it needs comment. He can’t do a 24/7 Trump TV station, but a place where anyone, absolutely anyone, could view and in just a few minutes hear the man directly, free of MSM taint.
Feel free to pass on my idea if you get the chance!
BTW I’m sure some his best advisors are his family - they all seem pretty switched-on to me - they could make their own contributions to the new Trump Channel on his days off. We’ve had the Cinton and Bush dynasties so that shouldn’t be a problem!
I have been seeing scores of Hillary ads on ID and other TV channels and they have been relatively well done. Trump needs to counter them.
Well you are right. Most people don’t pay much attention to politics at all until about 2 weeks before the election. And most people don’t glue themselves to the news channels 24/7.
*** Which shirt do you have? ***
I have the official Trump Men’s Short Sleeve Tee in navy.
Says Trump in big white letters.
Says Make America Great Again in smaller letters.
Has 5 red stars underneath the letters.
It was $20.00
Got a friend the camo hat, and he gets lots of thumbs ups, and where’d you get that?
