Former Speaker Newt Gingrich is the top contender in a new poll to be presumptive GOP presidential nominee Donald Trump's running mate.

On Tuesday morning, Gingrich had 39.3 percent support in a Drudge Report poll that asks users who Trump should pick to run on his ticket.

Sen. Joni Ernst (R-Iowa) was in second place with 31.3 percent of the vote.

Other contenders include Sen. Jeff Sessions (R-Ala.) with 15.2 percent and Indiana Gov. Mike Pence with 7.4 percent. New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie takes 5.4 percent and Sen. Bob Corker (R-Tenn.) garners 1.5 percent of the vote.

The Drudge Report online poll surveyed 112,155 people as of about 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday.

Joni in second? Already? A few more remarks like “My boots were on the very ground . . .” and she’ll leave even Newt in the dust.

I’ll take any articulate fighter, frankly. I want a VP that will get up in the VP debate and stand his/her ground and not take it up the keester like that p@ssy Paul Ryan did with Biden in his debate. It was the epitome of DISGRACEFUL. His boss Mitt was no better.

I agree with you. A fighter is what is needed. I think America will respond well to strength.

I have to say that I agree with Laura Ingraham (I know he’s made some goofups), but I would like to see Chris Christie take down the left the way he did Little Marco.

I just voted for Pence, next best thing to Kasich in rust belt IMHO.
But, Ernst would really shut the MSM up big league and set them back on their heels!!! She is also a blunt speaker whose personality might mesh quite well with Trump!
Remember she did say that she grew up castrating hogs and declared that “So when I get to Washington, I’ll know how to cut the pork!!”
BINGO!!!

Ernst has a better chance as VA or Def secretary. I have a feeling that was what meeting was about. Not VP.

Let the Senators hold their positions. We need the Senate, too....or all is lost.

"Gingrich leads Drudge poll for Trump's VP"

-As he should. Others that might make it are Huckabee, Rudy and Sessions.

Newt is the smartest person in that list.

If you don’t know this then you have fallen for the liberal media bias.

YES I KNOW he is not perfect - and I have disagreed with him several times too.

But he BALANCED THE BUDGET and knows how to do it- he could take over as president tomorrow. I lke Ernst, but does she have executive management experience? or did she just have boots on the ground..?

I want a SMART choice- not a political one.

Newt is like a baseball player that can play every position. He’ll make a great VP.

One point. Newt was basically railroaded out of the speakership by guess who. All the side shows were just that. But it gave them the reason to force him out. He wasnt really well liked because he rubbed the elites the wrong way.

Under his speakership, the budget was basically balanced. What happened to spending after he was forced out?
That is why they forced him out.

I would sooner he was appointed to a spot in the administration and take someone younger than him and tutor that person for running after.

if we had nominated gingrich instead of mittens in 2012, the country probably wouldn’t be in the fix that we’re in right now.

I like the idea of Newt as VP. I was really surprised at how low Chris Christie rated. I guess many GOP still haven’t forgiven him for helping Obama to win in 2012.
Not surprised Sessions rating low. He has a good grasp on policy, but is studios. has never been dynamic in demeanor.
