One of the nations leading experts on marijuana and criminal justice fears Californias ballot to legalize marijuana could result in plummeting prices and rising rates of marijuana disorder.
Professor Mark Kleinman, an adjunct scholar at the Center for American Progress excoriates the Adult Use of Marijuana Act, which qualified for a November ballot June 28.
The bill allows commercial legalization of marijuana and six plants per household, with no limits on the quantity produced but a ban on sales and advertising to minors. California would impose a $9.75 tax (33 cents per gram) of flowers and a 15 percent sales tax on the retail price on top of the states regular sales tax.

Many growers would not want to bother if that’s all they could make.
Good.
Pot zombies and the Omega Man.
I knew some people who grew mj back in the early 80s and they made over $1000 a kilo, or maybe it was $2000, I was not privy to their business details. I’m sure it is more now. To make onl $500 plus a pound, growers won’t even want to grow. Dope dealers will prefer to sell drugs that are more profitable.
A big Ha Ha if this is true.
Since it was legalized here in Washington the police have mostly stopped paying attention to people selling it illegally and avoiding the taxes. They also don’t seem to have any interest with people now growing it in their homes for resale and for their own use. My guess is that the state is getting nothing from the vast majority of marijuana that is being consumed. I assume also that the increased supply has lowered the price considerably for those avoiding the taxes. However usage also appears to be up also. The smell of marijuana seems to be everywhere so maybe demand has kept the price up.
There will be labs processing cannabis into wax and shatter and fluid for e-cigs, don’t worry.
Colorado may have more tax money but they have lots more problems too
By doing it at the polls rather than legislature, they are bringing in 1st time voters and Low Information Voters (to sway the 2016 vote for Democrats).
Funny how the stat opposed the result (and disregarded it at the Supreme Court level) when California voters overwhelmingly voted against same sex marriage.
properly, doughnuts go in a box
Since I’m not a pot head, is the final price good or bad? What’s the joints per gram?
Historically there was bootleg liquor to avoid tax, but decent bootleg liquor is a lot harder to make than pot, and therefore easier to keep out of the market, so what you’ve observed makes a lot of sense to me.
Or driving!
The number of fatal crashes with people with marijuana in their system has doubled since it was legalized here in Washington. But we are being told that it is too early to tell if it has really affected traffic safety.
The other posts on the thread indicate that $43 per ounce is a very low price.
I didn’t even know how much a gram was, so don’t ask me for the joint equivalent!
LOL! Guffaw! Chortle!
I don’t care what they charge for it. I won’t use it, even if it was free.
And anyone who cites research proving that smoking it lowers the IQ and causes mental illness are hateful tyrants.
Oh, so you don’t want to help support the state in raising revenues huh? LOL! I know plenty of folks who toke. Sad dang situation no doubt. Me, I’m a control freak. I like to stay in control of myself and don’t need any “enlightenment”. Life is a trip without the aid of something that’s gonna alter my feeble little pea brain as it is.
The Mexican pot cartel is buying up houses in states like Colorado and turning them into grow houses filled with marijuana plants. They have already adapted to our wonderful new laws.
A good friend of mine has a nephew that is a drug using ne’er do well. He tried to get him to work in his pest control business, but after pot was legalized the kid decided that it would be easier to make money growing pot. Of course he had no interest or knowledge about how to set up any type of legal marijuana business, but he did start growing and selling marijuana. It is a lot easier to grow pot than navigate through the government regs. All it takes are a few grow lights, gardening soil and some seeds to get started. It turns out that the nephew is making much more money doing that than killing bugs, and he is able to stay stoned all the time too.
LOL!
That reminds of Tom Wolfe's book "The Electric Kool-Aid Acid Test" about Ken Kesey's Merry Pranksters' LSD use in the 1960s.
They said one of their goals was to learn how to function high on acid all the time.
And jackboot lickers. Don't forget that FReefer epithet.
