We used to strive toward excellence. People tried to better themselves. Not just to get into a good school, but because bettering yourself was inherently rewarding.
Somewhere around 1960 or so, the country noticed that some folks were better than others and the country decided that this was not OK. The lazy, unmotivated, untalented people felt bad about themselves. This had to change.
Now everyone gets a trophy. Freaks are put on pedestals. And people of genuine accomplishment are either criticized or ignored. Bettering yourself?? Why would you do that?? It's mean to other people.
Used to be a great country.

This is how the men of the greatest generation were raised and went on to fight and win the battles of WW2. God bless them all.
Had they known what America has become today..............

Not to brag or anything, but it looks like quitting my job when he was 3 years old and staying home to raise him myself was a smart move. My only child turned out good - except for the foreign language and handwriting part.

Thank you for the post.
I disagree about the fighting one. Boxing is not enough. Learn to fight to win. Winning is more important than footwork.
Music? Not me. Even after my mother’s best efforts.

To my eye, an American who cannot throw and catch a ball seems pathetic and grotesque.

The mind boggles at what a modern-day version of such a list might include...
Picking the right emoji, drone-flying, tattoo design, and cross-dressing tips would doubtless make the list.

Great essay. Thanks for posting.
As the father of a mid-twenties son and as an uncle to two mid-twenties nephews, I think my sister and I score pretty well on the criteria the author wrote. But we are strong conservatives where these arts are still considered to be what makes the man.

A good read, well-deserving of a holiday bump.

Ever watch children eat in large groups? Most do not use a fork for any food. We are too lazy to introduce our youth to the most basic elements of manners. Children today are not expected to do most of the things this father expected of his son, and consequently they are poorer for it, as is our society.

“I have three fears for the future of my son: that he will join the Army, enter the Church, or become horsey.”
That line was a big turnoff to me and did not “bring smiles” to this veteran.
