Grew up in the Bronx. As a kid in the fifties we would experiment by taking the powder out of ash cans (pre m-80) and pack it into larger vessels.

We were the lucky one....no parts missing. We read in the daily paper about some poor yutz who blew of his fingers-hand-foot..... Like my experiments with motorcycles in the early 70s, I wonder how I survived it intact.

I'm not buying it. A "hobbyist" playing with his chemistry kit would more likely play in his backyard, not leave a bomb in Central Park for someone to step on.

Who steps on a strange bag, if that's what the "firecracker" was in, on a path? I've never heard of "friction" setting off a "firecracker."

Yeah blockbusters were nasty.

Tossed one behind a dumpster which had a stockade fence around it. It blew a good deal of fence out which showered cars with wood chunks all over a parking lot I was traversing to enter a bar, one 4th. I decided to not enter that bar as the patrons filed out to see what all the noise was about

I'm not so sure. I grew up in New York City. There are just as many "mad scientist" teen age boys per capita as anywhere else. Some of the things I did when I was that age...
