The 5 Conservatives Vying to Become Britain’s Next Prime Minister

Boris Johnson’s surprising announcement on Thursday that he would not seek the leadership of the British Conservative Party — and by extension, succeed David Cameron as prime minister — leaves five candidates for the job.

In a series of votes, Conservative members of Parliament will whittle down the list to two finalists, and the party’s roughly 150,000 members will choose between them. The process is expected to be completed by Sept. 9.

The Conservative Party, which won a majority in Parliament last year, has a five-year mandate that lasts until 2020. But given the turmoil after voters decided that Britain should leave the European Union, a new general election is not out of the question.

I've heard Teresa May speak in Parliament a number of times but am basically completely unfamiliar with the rest.Although I'm unfamiliar with her basic attitudes on certain topics Teresa May strikes me as being a pretty impressive woman.I can easily see her as being a better Prime Minister than anyone that the Opposition would...or could...put forward.

Gove or Leadsom. Maybe Fox.

May supported EU fascism during the campaign. This speaks to her character.

For there to be a new general election before 2020 the Govt would have to ‘win’ a 2/3rds no-confidence vote in itself, which means it would need the support of the opposition.

Labour would have to be crazy to help the Tories with this vote. Their only chance of gaining in a election is for four years to go by, so that no-one will remember their Bremain stance.

Theresa May is an impressive woman and I don’t think she’d be a bad Prime Minister. But Gove would be my choice if I was able to make one.

What is the word on the street about who will be the next PM?

Teresa May is an almost prohibitive favorite with Michael Gove the longshot.

The MPs will whittle it down to two contenders: probably Gove vs May.

Then the rank-and-file party members vote on those two. That process will finish in September.

Right now I have no idea which way the party will lean.

Hindsight is always 20:20!

Indeed.

But I actually don’t think she was as bad as a lot of people do. She was, as it turned out, the wrong person for the time - it was her job to deliver Brexit, and she wasn’t personally committed to it. That’s a major failure but it’s an unusual situation.

I think she was just not up to it. She was a bad home minister and a limpets of a PM.
