Civilian Access to Body Armor Stirs Debate
Officials worry about bulletproof equipment ending up in criminals hands; shooting in Orlando highlights issue
By Ben Kesling June 17, 2016 5:30 a.m. ET
Weeks before Omar Mateen went on an Orlando shooting spree, he stopped at a gun shop trying to buy body armor capable of stopping police handgun rounds. The store didnt carry such armor.
Had Mateen just gone online, he could have easily gotten armor capable of stopping not only handgun fire, but bullets from SWAT team snipers or even armor-piercing rifle ammunitionshipped right to his door with few questions and no meaningful background check.
The mass shooting in Orlando has sparked fresh calls for an assault weapons ban and other efforts to make certain types of guns more difficult to get. But body armor, which could make a shooter much more difficult to stop, remains relatively unregulated.
Law-enforcement officials and some manufacturers worry that the bulletproof equipment will increasingly show up in criminals hands.

You’re not a government “official”. No body armor for you!
Ron White had some good opinions on this. d;^)
Too late. I got mine.

Ferfal wrote for a prepper crowd, based on life in Argentina which had effectively collapsed at that time. Employment was near zero; home invasions were rampant, and the police themselves had become a problem.
He was fond of telling people that when your country collapses, it isn’t like Mad Max in the movies, in fact everything still looks normal. It just isn’t normal. You still have to go about your business, you still have to travel out and about. But you can’t always be sure who you are meeting with and what are their intentions, and you definitely can’t depend upon law enforcement to come to your aid.
So you can’t carry an AK, because it isn’t like the movies. But you do need to take care, both you and your family. So a concealable weapon and a vest for business meetings, or when carrying cash. Or just to pop out to the corner grocer, because you don’t know who will follow you home.
Luckily, we’re not there yet. But he commented that body armor was very expensive and difficult to get if you wait until you need it. Better to get it while you don’t need it.
“Only the nobility may wear armor ... has a sort of medieval ring to it, eh?”

“In other words, it was by no means an exclusive right of the knight to wear and fight in armor. Foot soldiers such as mercenaries, or groups of retainers comprising peasants, as well as burghers, also participated in armed conflict and accordingly protected themselves with armor of varying quality and extent. Indeed, the burghers (of a certain age, and above a stipulated wealth or income) of most medieval and Renaissance cities were expectedan expectation often enforced by laws and decreesto acquire and keep their own arms and armor.”
“It depended on the time, place, and gender, but generally a peasant was not allowed to own or borrow land, leave their lord’s land without permission, or own a sword, although they could have a dagger. Serfs could not become priests or take oaths of any sort, and were not allowed to own a baking oven; they had to pay to use the lord’s oven to bake their bread. Commoners were also not taught Latin, the language which church services were conducted, and they were forbidden from reading the Bible.”

Body armor? These guys have blown up and run aircraft into the World Trade Center. They have run ships into other ships.
Got a better idea.....how bout the first time one of these animals pulls a gun, one he got illegally, and yells “Alla Akbar,” 10 people with legal carry cards, and right next to him, just shoot him on the head because the real reason for the second amendment waa understood? And it is at that point that truly everyone is equal under the law. The difference is being outnumbered when you want to harm someone. May not have to happen more than a few times till it will stop. Otherwise it will happen many times if it is not stopped. Easy, inexpensive for the state, and efficient.

Why do you think the Gub'ment is working to regulate drones.
A drone with a simple pipe bomb can ruin the day of a Gub'ment police helicopter.
Get the model with built-in A/C ... that way you can even wear it in Arizona in the summer. A/C adds less than one foot to the diameter. :-)

I can tell you this story. Make of it what you wish:
When Khaddifi ordered his army to shoot Libyans, 75% of the army deserted and headed back to their provinces to protect their families. As the army retreated back home, the armories were left unguarded, allowing assorted factions to help themselves to various weaponry, probably including personal bulletproof vests.
When TSHF in Libya, a whole bunch of weaponry, munitions and accessories became available. Believe me, nobody stood there like a stupid shithead protecting armories.
It will be no different here.
Those billions of rounds of ammo ordered by the mail carriers and the fat clowns at the ATF? Help yourself.
Once again, reality overtakes satire. I should have guessed. (The gizmo actually looks like it’s a good idea.) Thanks for the enlightenment.
It’s no joke when your tee-shirt is soaked with sweat.
They also make an aerosol deodorizing spray.
As you can imagine, body armor gets funkay. Febreze works.
Series, body armor is better to have and not need than vice versa.
Bought it online, no biggie.
OH MY GOD!!! Someone could go to Home Depot and buy 50 lb bags of lawn fertilizer. THEN they could go to a gas station and buy 5 gallons of diesel. WITH NO QUESTIONS ASKED!!!
Soon stacking kevlar fabric together will be illegal? How about ceramics? How about steel?
