Joanne Barnaby was stalked by a wolf for 12 hours, eventually leading the animal into a trap
What's the best way to fend off a wolf that's stalking you? Bait it with a bear cub, of course.
It sounds incredible, but that's exactly what Joanne Barnaby did when she got into a terrifying situation while out picking morel mushrooms near Fort Smith, N.W.T., last Friday.
Barnaby and her friend Tammy Caudron headed out to an area burned by wildfires to spend an hour or two searching for the elusive morels. They soon became separated, leaving Barnaby alone with her loyal dog, Joey.
Once her pail was full of mushrooms, she turned to head back toward her truck.
"I heard this growl behind me. There was a long, tall, very, very skinny wolf. A black wolf. And his legs were spread and his hair was standing, and he was growling, and baring his teeth."
Joey charged the animal, but the wolf stood its ground.
"I don't think Joey expected that," Barnaby says. "I didn't want him hurt, of course, but I also knew that if the wolf got Joey, I'd be next."

LOL...
My turkey story isn't nearly as good.... early, but completely light out, and I only saw 1 turkey. Elk hunting. Windy. Lots of trees and ground cover. Somehow I got within a few yards when he exploded up and flew right by me into a tree ~30 yards away. Seemed 100x bigger flying by then when it landed in the tree.
Took me 10 minutes before the adrenaline abated enough to walk normally again. Soiled myself as well.

The scariest thing I have ever encountered in the woods (in the pitch dark before sun up) was..... Turkeys!
There is nothing quite like very quietly making your way through the woods toward your tree stand in the pitch dark, all by yourself, on a brisk quiet morning when, suddenly, the forest erupts with sound like trees are falling over and the forest is crumbling down on top of you. Turkeys flying/crashing through the branches of the trees right over head makes one hell of a racket. It took me a few minutes to understand what the sound had been. I think I pooped a little.
I was camped out in a hammock one time, fast asleep. A big ol' turkey walked right underneath me, looked up, and screamed its bloody head off!!! I just about had to be pulled out of the treetop!

Sounds like the response David E. Petzal gave a reader in Field & Stream last month. He was asked if there was ever a time when he got rattled during a hunt. Petzal said that years ago, he was in Texas on a hunt and inadvertently walked under a big live oak tree that was a roost for several hundred turkeys. He spooked them, and said that after they all took off squawking and flapping and crapping, it took him weeks to get back to normal. If you've ever read his column, you'd know that would take some doing.

Rattlesnakes. Nothing like having a 4 foot diamondback start rattling 3 feet from your feet to get the old adrenaline going! Damned things are invisible in the dry grass. You don’t know they’re there until the rattle or strike.

Deer hunting in Vermont, climbing a steep hillside, trying not to make any noise in the near-dark dawn. A couple of partridge took off from a tree and the THUNDER of their wings, made me drop to my knees [to gather my wits] ...scared the holy beegeezus outta me.

LOL, Morel poachers.
I have heard people go a little crazy over those mushrooms. I only cooked with them once...pork medallions sautéed with morels and pitted cherries
It came out really good. I poured the juice I reconstituted the morels in into the sautee pan.
But I wouldn't go one someone's land to get those, or do anything else without asking first.
It's bad manners to impinge on the possessions of another person without their consent, and I dislike bad manners.

Yeah...I have about spotted myself at that sound before, especially when you aren’t expecting it, which is just about every time!
