A public university in Michigan has announced it’s deleting a requirement that all students complete at least one math course before graduating. At the same time, the school is seriously considering a new requirement that would compel students to complete four courses that promote diversity.

Wayne State University (WSU) in Detroit is one of the largest schools in Michigan, with some 27,000 students. Until now, all of them had to either take one of three basic math classes to earn their degree, or else test out by performing sufficiently on a relevant SAT, CLEP, or AP test.

But going forward, students will not longer have to demonstrate any mathematical competency to graduate, unless their particular course of study requires it.

” If you can’t do simple algebra, you don’t belong in college. PERIOD. “

Racist!

Math be HARD!

No problem! Today’s high school graduates have learned very well with the new politically correct educational system.

I asked a recent graduate to speak some advanced mathamatics to me to see what he had learned and all that he could say that he learned was:

Pie are round...cornbread are square! Pr’

Draw a right-angled triangle with sides of 1 and a
hypotenuse of (square root of 2). The angles are
90, 45 and 45. Then,

The sine of 45 degrees
= opposite side / hypotenuse
= 1 / (square root of 2)
= 1 / 1.4142..
= .707...

Dumb it down folks, dumb it down so the snowflakes can coast into their future without the skills to keep a checkbook. America is INDEED LOST.

"The further ‘dumbing down’ continues."

That's exactly the thought I had.

Phillip K Dick wrote a story to challenge the idea of abortion. It said that children were not considered fully human until they had the intellectual ability to solve algebra / 8th grade math.
Practical application - parents could have kids killed or given up to the state to put down if no one adopted them up to middle school age. And you could kill the retarded and brain damaged who never achieved the level.
A man tried to challenge it by saying he forgot his math skills, hence the story.

0.54 white x 0.44 male = 0.2376 white male.
But then, I’m old school.

“Too dumb to pass math, I take it. It’s time to be honest. If you can’t do simple algebra, you don’t belong in college. PERIOD. “

I didn’t take a math class in almost 40 years. I went back to school and the first class I took was Statistics and since it was an 8 week semester, I had to do double the work. Never got past Algebra in high school.

I cried, missed every social function, didn’t talk to anyone at home. 6 hours a day once I got home from work. Got a B+. If I could do it, the little babies can do it.

I agree, algebra is a basic, essential skill that every person should have. I don’t know about you, though, but I had learned everything I needed to know about algebra, along with quadratics, trig, exponents and logarithms, and geometry, by the time I finished high school.

The only math I learned in university that is actually applicable to daily life was statistics. Not that I have ever done any statistical calculations since that source, but at least I have an understanding of what various types of statistics actually mean.

I liked math in school when it was practical math for life situations. I really hated Algebra I, Geometry I and Statistics I that I had to take for college. Today’s another day that I haven’t used Algebra and it hasn’t enriched my life.

It is far--very far--worse than simply "dumbing down." It is the type of indoctrination that made Soviet Russia & Nazi Germany functional.

To understand the cult of "Diversity," consider:

Diversity.

Yup, college is tough. It is supposed to be tough. You don't take the tough out of college, because it ain't college then.

You would be shocked at what gets into college. You would be stunned at what makes it into community colleges! I have read printed out research papers that were final drafts printed out by accident or left on the library computers and my mouth just falls open in incredulity at the total lack of knowledge and abilities at this point in these young adults lives.

I have always pushed my children in education to learn to write well written, cohesive, and understandable paragraphs. I also push them to learn to speak well in public. I encourage them to get to the point of their presentation, be clear, and yet brief in their presentation and that they should also be able to do basic mathematics. These basic tools puts them one hundred percent ahead of the pack in today’s USA. Most current high school graduates write and read at a 5th grade level or worse and the business world needs and wants something far better.

In other news, a record number H1B visas were issued to Chinese students this year. Hiring managers at the nations top technology companies stated that is impossible to find any US citizens who could perform basic arithmetic.
