Why is America so alarmed by Brexit? Lest the reader be in doubt, remind yourself of this. Never before has a sitting US president visited a fellow democracy in a bid to sway an election. Nor, until now, have 13 former US secretaries of state and defence risked addressing a letter to a foreign electorate with the same motive. Ditto eight former Treasury secretaries and five former supreme commanders of NATO. Not only has the US establishment broken its non-interference rule over Brexit, it is stamping on its smithereens. If we did not know better, it might seem the UK was uniquely important to the future of the world.
Seductive though that thought may be particularly for a Brit living in Washington there is a domestic subtext that can be summarised in two words: Donald Trump. If the British are foolish enough to leave Europe, perhaps Americans are crazy enough to elect Mr Trump. Of course, no one would claim a causal link between what happens in Britain on June 23 and the US presidential election in November. Most American voters have never heard of Brexit. Nor would most feel strongly either way if they had.
Yet there are sufficient echoes to trouble America's besieged elites. In much the same way US music companies test products in the British market, or TV production companies simply borrow what works, the Brexit referendum has become a trial balloon for the health of Western democracy....

Get while the getting’s good! Once they’ve got their own army the door’ll close.
Brexit may be a bellwether for Trump. Pray for your fellow anglos.
Yup.
The Brexit is not the cause of Trump, and Trump is not the cause of the Brexit. But both, and a lot more, are riding a wave of antagonism from the general populations about their leaders. The EU has not just the UK to worry about, many countries are ready to leave. Scotland just tried to leave the UK. The Philippines just elected an anti establishment president. While the previous generation’s general trend was integration, this current generation’s trend will be towards breakup and decentralization.
“Once they’ve got their own army the door’ll close.’
So who is going to pay for this army. Spain has no money — same for France, Italy and everyone else. Only Germany and Britain will pay and Britain will then be asked to “just donate” your fine Navy to the cause. Vote LEAVE - just do it.
Incorrect premise...America is not afraid of Brexit....the D.C. political class is afraid of Brexit because it weakens the globalist agenda
The EU has been trying for years to implement a transaction tax on the London financial and stock markets which the Brits have so far successfully resisted.
So there...
Yes.
LOL - Edward Luce doesn't get it - we yearn NOT to live in a hellhole... this has nothing to do with the past - it has to do with the future.
The European Union was established with the cart before the horse. First should come the political framework. The Union impacts on sovereignty of each one joining, yet the governance is an issue which should have been addressed before the trade agreements.
I think the Brits and other countries would be wise to exit as fast as possible. I will cheer if they do - let the Bilderberg”s taste the error of their ways - this was their brainchild. Just more elites proving they are not the smartest people on Earth.
Exactly. Patriots who value sovereignty, independence and personal freedom support efforts to separate Britain from the EU.
The EU is a statist cancer. (Not the individual countries necessarily, but the confederacy itself.)
The video is a fantastic economics lesson in capitalism and trade.
I didn’t see any cons.
But likely the somewhere out there after the british withdrawal there will be no confidence in the Euro.
Help me out here. Short explanation of Brexit
the notion that Brexit is any problem for US interests is lunacy, thus the involvement of any US officials in trying to influence the UK vote is despicable in the extreme
it is simply none of our business, but if the UK does choose to separate from the EU that should not be even a tiny hiccup in US political and economic relations with both the UK and EU
this is simply the US globalist elite sucking up to their EU counterparts -— sooooo un-American!!!
