The House voted Friday to order the Library of Congress to keep using the term illegal alien to describe those who come to the U.S. without authorization, saying that as long as federal laws written by Congress use those terms, so should their official records-keeper.
The library earlier this had proposed changing, saying that despite being used in law, the term had become pejorative and needed to be axed. Instead the library said it would use noncitizen to refer to illegal immigrants, and unauthorized immigration to refer to the broader issue.
Republicans revolted against the change, and demanded in the annual legislative branch funding bill that the library use terms that reflect federal law...

Trump effect.
I agree and it’s good to see.
I am in total freaking shock....are we growing a pair?
Trump rubbing off on the Congress!
The Republicans did zero to stop Obama’s illegal amnesty, thousands cross the border everyday, but at least we can still call them illegal. Another great victory for the GOP.
Didn’t they get the word that Chancellor Obama has nullified the legislature?
But how will the Ministry of Truth do its job if it can’t control language?
What’s wrong with “undocumented immigrant”? I mean it doesn’t exactly suggest that we have no idea who they are or what they want. I doesn’t mean they’re terrorists, necessarily, just that who don’t have a frigging clue if they are or not.
I’ve always prefered “foreign invader”.
When is Congress going to order the National Cathedral not to remove the Confederate flags from their stained glass windows?
What’s wrong? It’s a euphemism: A mild, indirect, or vague term for one that is considered harsh, blunt, or offensive: “Euphemisms such as ‘slumber room’ ... abound in the funeral business” (Jessica Mitford).
Whose feelings are we hurting by using the terms used by the federal statutes? We’re all grownups here. They’re aliens and they’re here illegally, so they are illegal aliens.
As A. Lincoln put it, “How many legs does a dog have if you call its tail a leg?
Four. Calling a tail a leg doesn’t make it a leg.”
Agree 100%. The abundance of Mexican flags waved at Trump’s San Jose rally protest was an act of war, IMO.
It's a step in the right direction..
Sarcasm, actually. I’m for calling people what they are, not flattering them with pleasant falsehoods. We’re becoming a society where everyone is offended by anything that isn’t flattery and feel-good descriptions. And it makes people more bitter as a result, giving them every reason to point fingers and call other bigots when they’re only telling the truth.
I don’t care what word they use. I’m more outraged we pay for this place. Trump should sell it to the smithsonion institute. I hope we don’t pay for that too.
“Undocumented Democrat” would be accurate too.
Yes it is, one small step for man. :)
Precisely. But a lot of people say it with a straight face, ready to call you a `xenophobic bigot’ if you disagree with their sophistry.
Take away the facts in the descriptive label (as used by the legislators in the statutes), that they are foreign nationals who broke our immigration laws, making them criminals at the get-go, and replace them with, “Why, it’s just a few papers separating those yearning to breathe free from joining a nation of immigrants ...”
So more violence to the language, thus critical thinking by the most transparent administration ever, in favor of a general amnesty with vague promises of border security as in `86.
Good for the GOP, although I suspect if not for the Trump phenomenon this would have `slipped through the cracks’ as a “de minimis matter”.
