PhD student who shot his UCLA prof dead: Indian rubber engineer killed thesis supervisor [tr]

Mainak Sarkar, 38, who lives in Minneapolis but is thought to have been born in India, shot engineering professor William Klug, 39, dead in his office before turning the gun on himself, the LAPD confirmed. Sarkar appears to have had a long-running feud with Klug.

In a blog post uploaded on March 10 under his name, he writes that the professor 'stole all my code and gave it another student' and brands him a 'sick man'.

The post, which was uploaded to a blog called Long Dark Tunnel but has since been deleted, says: 'William Klug, UCLA professor is not the kind of person when you think of a professor. He is a very sick person. I urge every new student coming to UCLA to stay away from this guy. 'My name is Mainak Sarkar. I was this guy’s PhD student. We had personal differences. He cleverly stole all my code and gave it another student. He made me really sick.

'Your enemy is your enemy. But your friend can do a lot more harm. Be careful about whom you trust. Stay away from this sick guy.'

However, a source told the LA Times that Sarkar's claims were 'psychotic', adding that his characterization of Klug as a thief is 'absolutely untrue'.

Klug was dedicated to helping Sarkar pass the course, the source added, saying he bent over backwards to help even though the quality of Sarkar's work was often below par.

“Indian rubber engineer”

Probably worked on the design team for the extra-small ones.

Indian huh? Maybe that explains why he had a gun in a Free Fire Zone.
He probably thought Gun Free meant you could get firearms for no charge. Just a small handling and shipping fee.

So now instead of stealing our jobs they’re just killing us.

Grad student madness. Anyone remember Theodore Streleski? Math grad student at Stanford (19 years and still no PhD) - killed his adviser with a ball peen hammer. I like to tell my professor friends about him. The way he presented it at the trial, it was the only logical thing to do.

He was released in 1985 and is out there now. Which is why I'm in favor of ball peen hammer control.

How difficult would it be for a foreign student to legally buy a gun in California? Or is it even possible?

About 20 years ago a local high-school auto shop teacher was attacked by a student with a ball peen hammer. The guy survived, but he has never been right since that day.

I would bet it is easier for an illegal foreigner to get a gun in California than a law abiding citizen.
Dollars to doughnuts.

Minneapolis is not in California however the real crime in California is not that he killed a professor, the real crime is he brought a gun across the state line.< /sarcasm>

Bummer. So he offed the wrong guy, it looks like. What I like is this:

Mr. Streleski received a sentence of seven years based on a defense of diminished capacity, according to newspaper accounts. He did not admit any remorse when he was freed, but said he didn’t have any plans to kill again.

He also said "But I can't predict the future." Brr...
