Oh wow. Looks like a literal army of law enforcement officers who would be confronting ONE individual. We are paying for all of that. If the professor were allowed to be armed, this might not have ended this way, who knows? And, look how all of the innocent people in the area are humiliated by having to kneel and be searched. This is bordering on ridiculous.

He only served 7 years and the state tried to release him sooner, but he didn’t want to be restricted from going back to Stanford. I guess if you’re a killer do it in California.
The reality is even worse than most Americans understand.
Essentially all science and engineering PhDs in the USA receive some level of federal government subsidy - including non-citizens.
On top of that, the killer may have received a subsidy from the Indian government when he first entered the PhD program.
Or, he may come from a prosperous Indian family that desired USA legal residency, so they sponsored their smartest child through USA graduate school.
Bottom Line - a completely average (or below average) subsidized foreign student displaced a completely average American student in UCLA's engineering program.

A “White” Indian?
While my experiences are from 40 years ago, as a graduate student, I saw abuse of foreign graduate students.
The foreign students were under tremendous pressure, because their entire family depended on them. Some Professors took advantage of this, and used these students as personal servants to pick up laundry, whatever.
It was a long time ago, but I doubt that it has gotten better.
I doubt that was the case here.
