From the book: “Eric Burdon once remarked that Jimi ‘did have a right-wing attitude.....”

Although contemporary political pundits described his interpretation of "The Star-Spangled Banner", as a statement against the Vietnam War, three weeks later Hendrix explained its meaning: "We're all Americans ... it was like 'Go America!'

If a performer seems even a little “right”, considering their pressures, chances they are a lot right.

I was pretty sure I said “chances ARE...”, but stuff happens.

Especially the pressures during the time Hendrix was alive and famous, ‘67 - ‘70, when libs nationwide were going particularly bonkers.

But Jimi was his own man — he didn’t give a rip what others thought.

Jimi Hendrix enlisted and went to the Airborne.

There’s just a certain mindset that voluntarily does something like that, never mind that he only served two years and received an honorable discharge.

There’s plenty of accounts of Jimi Hendrix responding with an attitude of “Oh, shut UP” to all the counter-culture types who tried to make him one of their showcase comrades for political purposes. Pretty soon he was so much bigger than everyone else was that he couldn’t be accessed and kept the lefties at arms length.

To be fair, he joined the Army to get out of doing jail time. Then, he was such a head case, the Army gave him an honorable discharge...after only one year of a three year enlistment (an ankle injury was the excuse his commanders had to get him out).

I liked Hendrix, and as a young man in SEA we all heard of him after Woodstock (I enlisted in 65, I think he enlisted a few years earlier).

I had MANY friends who were given the choice of jail or enlist in those years. It was common even during WWII (maybe before, and I think it would do a damn good bit to this country if they still had that practice!)

As far as the ankle injury, that was not uncommon where I did my PB (Fort Benning), usually it required some time off, but you had to retake the school unless you were going AB Ranger, then I think they only had 1 shot (someone correct me here) but they were on the towers at LEAST 6 hours a day in addition to normal training.

Lots of guys hurt their ankles, but not so much as later when the draft started (from what I was told it was a common way to get out of infantry, to enlist in jump then TRY to break an ankle).

He enlisted before me, so it wasn’t draft related. Also, if he had the same old grizzled Korean war berets (some bronze) as I did, they did not tolerate no BS unless you were a nutcase, and if you were sent by the courts, they took it personally to fix you right up.

If Hendrix couldn’t be “fixed up”, he was un-fixable. I never met a DI while I was at Benning (he was not at Benning, forgot where he went) that did not make it a personal project to make every screw up HIS personal project. I am not kidding about that either. These guys were tough as brass balls.

The kid had to have a serious screw loose.

But, I still like Hendrix. A lot. As much as I hated the whole Woodstock crowd, I heard so much of it my last year there, it has a very special place in me. Hendrix and a few others can instantly transport me right back to certain places with certain smells and sounds I sometimes otherwise forget.

But good on him for enlisting, most of these fools now-a-days I’m sure would rather do the jail time then man up and correct their lives.

Somehow a couple weeks ago the subject of Che came up in conversation with my daughter, age 23. She said that the first time she saw somebody on campus wearing a t-shirt with his image it confused her and she asked the person “Wasn’t he some kind of murderer or something?”. She said they had this stunned look implying they had no real idea who he was or why they were wearing the shirt. Made me very proud of my daughter, but it was a reminder of just how brain washed and raw ignorant most people are (of any generation ... the whole Che Guevara cult started with idiots of my age).

“Jimi Hendrix played backup for Lionel Richie”

Jimi was long dead before Lionel Richie appeared on the scene with his band, The Commodores.

He did play backup for Little Richard, though. Maybe that’s who you’re thinking of.
