Yes, Dropping Atomic Bombs On Japan Was A Good Thing

Today, President Obama visited Hiroshima. It was the first time a sitting president has done so. Of course, we’ve entered another arena of liberal debate: were the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki ethical/justified/moral? The answer is yes to all three. First, let’s delve into something a bit disconcerting, which is that an increasing number of Americans feel that the bombing was wrong (via WaPo):

In the first Gallup poll from 1945 just after the bombings, a huge 85 percent of Americans approved the bombings. However, figures from 2005 show a significant decline to 57 percent. Meanwhile, another poll conducted by the Detroit Free Press in the United States and Japan in 1991 found that 63 percent of Americans thought that the bombings were justified in a bid to end the war, while just 29 percent of Japanese did.

Obama is ignorant of the history of WWII and his statements about Hiroshima are a disgusting insult to the patriotic Americans who sacrificed so much to fight and win WWII.

Dropping atomic bombs on Japan by the most conservative of estimates saved over a million lives. The optimistic invasion plans expected at least .5 million American deaths and over 1 million Japanese deaths. The actual number would have been much higher. The Japanese were ordered to fight to the death. In the battle of Okinawa just before the planned invasion, all 100,00 Japanese had been killed. American casualties were over 70,000.

Who knows how many total casualties would have resulted from an invasion of Japan. But it would have likely been in the millions.

The atomic bombs forced Japan to surrender and allowed Japan to rebuild its country after WWII.

Obama is ignorant. His constant bad mouthing of America and patriotic Americans is disgusting.

Obama has never sacrificed anything for America. He has no right criticize patriotic Americans.

Once you review Operation Downfall and what a land invasion of Japan meant...you really shake your head over the extended war (probably not ending until mid-1947).

The other curious thing which is never discussed....the Russians would have moved their land-troops to the east and probably started an invasion of their own upon Japan. The Russians were working on their own nuke, and who is to say that by the end of 1946...they had the opportunity to dump a nuke on Japan.

I recall asking MarineBratDad about it some 45 years ago. He was part of the occupation force and I’ve got a Japanese Arisaka souvenir of war rifle in my closet to prove it.

His exact words were “They dropped the bomb, the war was over, and that was all right with your father.”

My opinion was formed at that moment.

I don't think you should say, "it was a good thing." I don't think any of our generals thought it was, "a good thing." It may have been a necessary thing, but not, "a good thing."

Also, Japan surrendered because of Russia, not the bomb. By the time we dropped the atomic bombs, we had already destroyed most of Japan's major and medium cities by conventional bombings. There weren't many cities left for us to bomb, except the ones that were so far north, we couldn't reach.

This is merely one more in a seemingly endless parade of examples of ignorance on Obama’s part. Lest they walk free and clear, he merely represents the thinking of most of the Left in the United States, haters of the U. S. one and all.

If you’re a registered Democrat these days, you’re either an enemy of the nation or brain dead.

Of course Obama goes beyond the mere despising of the nation and what it has stood for, to actually teaming up with it’s terrorist enemy’s organizations.

The man has used the Muslim Brotherhood for advisors in OUR White House, and has armed both it and al Qaeda.

For years on end he has been releasing terrorist leaders from Guantanamo to rejoin their former organizations to carry out terrorist against the United States and the West.

Of course they are a threat to Russia and everyone else too.

All the way from Southeast Asia, through Europe, and into the Americas, Obama has destabilized the world. He is either the world’s most ignorant leader ever, or charges should be brought up against him, he should be prosecuted, and when convicted should be incarcerated for life or simply shot at high noon.

I knew people who fought on Iwo Jima and other Pacific campaigns. They could tell you a think or two about Japan’s intention to surrender.

Of course Obama never bothered to give them as much attention as the enemies of our nation, of which he is one.

Japan surrendered because of the atomic bombs. It surrendered right after the bombs were dropped.

Dropping the bombs was a good thing because it ended the war, saved at least 1 million and more likely several million lives. It was a good thing because if there had been an invasion and the Japanese had fought to the last man as they were ordered, Japan would have never recovered and would not be the free and prosperous country it became after WWII.

There are very few actions in history that saved as many lives and prevented as much suffering and destruction as dropping the atomic bomb.

By the way. My father served in the Pacific during WWII. He said everyone who was there felt there would have been horrendous casualties and a prolonged war if the bombs had not been dropped. Everyone who was there supported it 100%.

Thank God for the Bomb, by Paul Fussell

Paul Fussell was an infantry lieutenant during World War II. In this book’s title essay, he evokes the ethos of wartime sentiment without flinching from Allied barbarism, then proposes that postwar arguments condemning President Harry Truman’s decision to drop atomic bombs on Japan characteristically emanate from authors who have never experienced combat.

The 150,000 odd dead civilians from Okinawa [out of 300,000] were unable to express their dead opinions in the Free Press poll.

The bombs certainly saved more Japanese lives than they took. Their effect was more psychological than anything and conventional weapons certainly killed way more Japanese than the A bombs ever did.

What should also be mentioned is that they probably saved a lot of Russian and European lives too by checking Stalin's plans for a global communist revolution.

It must also be noted that there has not been a WW3 since the advent of these weapons. The first century of the nuclear age has been relatively peaceful compared to the century preceding the nuclear age.

The bombs have saved infinitely more lives than they have taken and it is a false prophet indeed that claims to want to rid the world of nuclear wepaons in order to promote peace. Obama.

I’m glad the war ended early and my Dad came home alive, or I wouldn’t be here. I’m glad my Dad had a good long life and never had to fight the Japanese face to face under horrendous conditions which is what Daddy would have had to face if there had been a land invasion of Japan.

I notice unanimity among “conservatives” that dropping the bombs was moral.

The Allies’ demand for unconditional surrender was immoral.

Murdering civilians is immoral.

Consequentislism is also immoral. I.e., “dropping the bombs saved lives.”
