Sharia councils face inquiry into ‘discrimination against women’ (UK)

Home Secretary Theresa May has launched an independent inquiry into the state of Sharia law in the UK to examine whether Islamic courts are being used to support forced marriage and issue unfair divorces.

The government is concerned that some Sharia councils in Britain may be misusing the religious legal code to cause “harm” in communities.

The Home Office announced the review, which will be chaired by Islam expert Professor Mona Siddiqui, on Thursday.

The inquiry is part of the government’s counter-extremism strategy and is expected to be completed by 2017.

May drew on incidents of discrimination when she announced the review.

“A number of women have reportedly been victims of what appear to be discriminatory decisions taken by Sharia councils, and that is a significant concern,” she said.

“There is only one rule of law in our country, which provides rights and security for every citizen.”

Siddiqui, who is professor of Islamic and Interreligious Studies at the University of Edinburgh, said she is privileged to chair the review.

“At a time when there is so much focus on Muslims in the UK, this will be a wide-ranging, timely and thorough review as to what actually happens in Sharia councils,” she said.

There will be two religious and theological experts advising the committee, which includes family law barristers and retired High Court judge Sir Mark Hedley.

Earlier this year, RT examined the arguments for and against Sharia courts in the UK.

Sharia councils in the UK say they deal strictly with family matters, such as marriage and child custody battles, but there is concern that they constitute a parallel legal system.

“We believe that Sharia courts discriminate against women and especially against Muslim women,” Nazira Mahmari, of the Iranian and Kurdish Women’s Rights Organisation, told RT.

“We want all women to have the right to access the mainstream system,” she added.

Khola Hasan, a scholar from the Islamic Sharia Council, defended the need for Sharia courts, saying the English legal system is not interested in certain matters that affect Muslim families.

The very existence of these courts is what should be under inquiry.

Way too many camels' noses under the UK's tent.

They need to be careful not to lose their heads over this.

Kabuki theater.

They will find no “discrimination against women.”

Only Anglos are capable of that.

True.

But we have fervent supporters of Sharia Courts here on Free Republic.

When many of us here in Texas objected to letting La Raza Rick Perry anywhere near the presidency, they attempted to shout down our objection to the Sharia Courts Rick Perry granted to Muslims in Texas. How dare we make a big deal out of Sharia law.

What are they doing allowing these so-called “courts” in the first place. Hope they get shut down.

Here’s a suggestion, Theresa. CLOSE down these Sharia “courts.”

It’s the right thing to do for your nation.

I wonder if anyone in any government in any country anywhere could tell us just when does any issue gets an expeditious inquiry and result. Do any of these people live in the real world or is everything at a snail’s pace with results somewhere in the FAR future! How do they operate in their personal lives? Is everything done when they get good and ready to do it? Manana?

Morons. The only “religious law” exists where the majority of people vote for it. If you are stupid enough to vote for laws based on some religious BS, you deserve what you get.

Complete and utter imbecile, retarded morons.

Why are British courts so islamophobic???

Seriously though, will this investigation continue once bombs start going off in retaliation?

We keep getting told by ONE PERSON HERE that Sharia doesn’t exist in Britain, and that it’s just our imaginations running wild.

Hmmm.

Yep, denial and emotional bias can lead people far astray.

And destroy a civilization.

Ha! The once “Great” Britain now allows 14th Century barbarians to dispense “justice” to British subjects. Churchill and about 100 Kings and Queens are up to about 2500rpm by now.

They aren’t “misusing” the code. They are using it exactly as it was intended. Islam’s greatest recruitment tool is that it makes women little more than sex slaves.
