Its a fun job but a dangerous and unforgiving one.
DEFTAC gone wrong.
It’s always our Military and never our politicians.
Prayers for their recovery.
Sounds like a ‘bump and dump’. Two two-seaters. F/A-18 is my favorite fighter jet and WE SHOULD BUILD MORE OF THEM as attack fleets in large numbers. Prayers for the crew.
With the current state of our military we can’t afford to loose those planes. We might have to cut the welfare to a couple of islamist refugee families to cover the cost and we all know that’s not going to happen.
I’m Very glad the crew survived and hope for their complete recovery.
And I share your concerns about losing those planes too!
Our military capability grows weaker every year.

It’s a miracle two two-seaters collide and there’s not at least one fatality. I have always loved this aircraft. It is a work horse of the highest order and has paid for itself many times over. I worked on an F/A-18 program for many years. AWESOME AIRCRAFT built by McDonnell Douglas. One of the most intimidating-looking badarse mean mofo jets of all time.
Sounds like they ejected, so good possibility all are okay. Even more encouraging is the fact that all are alert and conscious.
Ejection is ride atop a mini rocket that poses its own set of risks, including canopy clearance or bodily impact with flying parts resulting from collision. It’s a miracle all four are alert and okay.
“initial reports point to some kind of an “in-flight mishap.”
Gee, ya think?
Tell me one of these doing a low, high-speed strafing run over Benghazi that night wouldn’t have had the Jihadis scattering like fleas!
“Recovered”? New speak for “stiffs”?
Yes, the “all four are alert” was an update to article after I posted it, that is encouraging.
The part about flying into the canopy during an ejection, is partially wrong. There is molded into the canopy a “string” of det. cord. During the ejection process, the canopy is fragmented & blown away form the flight crew, right before the ejection seat is activated. If the person is lucky enough they’ll return to flight status in a few months. The spinal column is compressed to such an extent that a person is only allowed to eject 3 times during a course of a 20 + year career in the military aviation. They can loose up to 3 inches in height with every ejection, because it is so violent.
I am/was USMC 7051 [Crash Fire Rescue], 0811 [Field ArtyBtryman],0151 [General Admin Clerk],0121 [Personal Admin Clerk], ect....in my 10 years,7 months,4 days of Marine Corps service [both active & reserve time]
The F/A-18 Martin Baker seat has two 'horns' on them that fracture the canopy.
First, thank you for your service. Secondly, the near 3 inch loss of height is shocking. I didn’t know that! Is that height loss permanent?
