A backdrop of Third World atrocity, suffering and merciless human-rights violations serves as the canvas for a faux-profound Hollywood love story in Sean Penn's stunningly self-important but numbingly empty cocktail of romance and insulting refugee porn, The Last Face. Beautiful movie stars — rugged, earthy Javier Bardem sporting flawless, bedroom-chic stubble, and iron butterfly Charlize Theron, wearing dewy no-makeup makeup and an excellent moisturizer — battle for 130 stultifying minutes to listen to their hearts while their souls take a hammering. Audiences are more likely to check out and just leave them to it....

This thread is for pure entertainment value -- the execrable Sean Penn has directed an incredibly self-important movie (as reviewed, I have not seen it and don't plan to see it), which is getting trashed by usually sympathetic critics. The audience at Cannes actually burst into laughter about a minute in, when they were supposed to be impressed by the film's seriousness and profundity....

This film reeks of liberal virtue posturing. Characters that fret about how insignificant their contribution is in a world gone mad are a liberal staple, like the noble savage and the sassy black momma. They don't really DO anything, but they agonize -- AGONIZE, I tell ya! -- over the horrors they see but are powerless to stop.

Their ideals and their language are all lofty, and they can boo hoo at mach two. But their leftist mindset props up regimes that commit genocides as regularly as a sunrise. Their failed policies enslave more millions than chains have ever done. And they think to make up in self-flagellation what they lack in moral integrity.

I expect this to bomb like a JDAM if it even gets released to American theaters.

It might play well in Venezuela. Provided anyone there had the money to go to the movies.
