Trey Gowdy: Benghazi report will be out before conventions
MSNBC ^ | 20 May 2016 | Matthew Kitchen

It’s been nearly four years since a September 11, 2012, raid on the American diplomatic compound in Benghazi, Libya, left four U.S. citizens dead, including an ambassador, and more than two years since the House of Representatives formed a special committee to investigate the attack. The House’s report on the events is coming soon – very soon.

It just might not be the whole report.

In an interview with Chuck Todd on “MTP Daily” Friday, committee chair Rep. Trey Gowdy, a Republican from South Carolina, said he plans to release the much sought-after draft in June.

“We’re going to get the report out – it will be in the next month,” Gowdy said, “and then I’ll let the reader know: This is what we’re missing, these are the agencies that haven’t produced it to us, and if witnesses come forward after the publication of our report, I’ll let the readers know that.”

Gowdy admitted that for “personal and professional reasons,” he would have rather the report come out last summer, but said he agreed with Todd that the committee owes it to voters to release it before the Republican and Democratic national conventions this summer, when the parties will meet to declare presidential tickets and shore up current and future agendas.

The delay, Gowdy said, was due to his committee’s lack of access to necessary documents and witnesses relevant to the investigation.

Democrats instead see the delay as a strategic maneuver to discredit Hillary Clinton, secretary of state at the time of the attacks, who is seen by Republicans “as the official who should ultimately be held responsible for the failures in Benghazi,” according to the Washington Post. Clinton was considered the strongest contender for the presidential nomination when the committee was originally formed in 2014

WHO order the stand down of military forces?!

I'm sorry, but what LEGAL significance do you believe that has?

US forces do not go into combat on their own in North African urban jungles. Nobody had to order them to "stand down", or any other such thing.

Somebody DID have to order them to intervene, if that was the command decision that was made, but it wasn't.

They weren't ordered to intervene, withholding such an order is entirely and properly within the discretion of the Commander-in-Chief, and if anyone could be properly punished by Congress for this (because there is certainly no article in the US Code that bears on the situation) it is Barack Obama, and the proper punishment is impeachment and removal from office.

Since the GOP sh*ts their pants every time anyone thinks of them doing their duty, their comical "investigation" of Benghazi is simply a farce to fool gullible voters into thinking they CARE about their responsibilities.

The Senator “should” have responded, “The difference, Madam Secretary is the TRUTH, and the American people and this body deserve the truth. And because you are either incapable or unwilling to provide the truth, I’m compelled to demand your resignation.”

Well, but he didn't, did he?

Nor should he have. Cabinet secretaries do not work for the US Congress. If the Senator, or the congressman, believed Hillary Clinton was unfit to serve as Secretary of State because of her blatant and continuing lies about this matter, he should not have demanded her resignation (which he has no authority to do), he should have demanded that his colleagues in the House impeach her and then demanded that his colleagues in the Senate remove her from office.

THAT is Congress's proper role in the Benghazi matter, not constant public bleating and fundraising over meaningless "hearings" which hear everything except the truth.

I wish I had a gif of Issa morphing into Gowdy.

I hope this is true and that the report has any teeth. I have some doubts but I’d love to be wrong. Did he just cover his own donkey and let her scrape through, for the love of the Uniparty he’s a part of, or did he nail her to the wall?

The idea that “Benghazi” is going to play a role in the 2016 election is just the last gasp of an incompetent and corrupt GOP.

Truth matters. I have still faith enough in the American people, including the low info, busy, voters who don’t stay on top of politics or know where to look for facts, to be thoroughly disgusted if they knew Hillary lied to the faces of the mothers of the dead heroes as they met the flag draped coffins holding their beloved sons.

Trey Goudy has proven to be one of my biggest disappointments.

Trey was way to friendly with Rep. Luis Gutierrez (D-IL) I knew he would be a disappointment when I saw him practically swapping tears with him after one of his amnesty proposals went down.

Big deal. They probably have the goods on Gowdy too.

The report will contain nothing.
